Is code written by AI tools “fit for purpose”? That’s a key question software development teams should be asking as the use of AI-powered tools to write code becomes ubiquitous. (And for good reason, as developers can save hours of manual time). Teams need to look closely at the AI-generated output. It should be held to the same testing and QA standards as human-written code. Questioning if the code is “fit for purpose”, is essentially finding out whether the code is doing what it is supposed to be doing. And for this, validation and verification are key. Validation is assessing whether the right product has been built. Verification assesses whether the implementation of the product conforms to the required specifications. While validation is more subjective, verification can be standardized, and even automated, through testing. For example, a unit test writing tool like Diffblue Cover tells you what the code is actually doing, and then serves as a baseline for regression testing when making changes to code going forward.
