Earth Day celebrations Overview: The Earth Day celebration at the Enterprise Project Organization (EPO) was an initiative taken up by the Green Construction Team and was a resounding success, with a strong emphasis on green construction practices and sustainability initiatives. The event brought together a diverse group of environmental enthusiast project groups and stakeholders, all united in their commitment to protecting our mother earth. Key Highlights: 1.   Green Construction Information Sessions: EPO organized a series of captivating information sessions focusing on green construction techniques and sustainable building practices. Attendees had the opportunity to learn about the latest innovations in eco-friendly architecture and construction materials, as well as strategies to minimize carbon footprint in the built environment. 2.   Environmental Diversity and Inclusion (ED&I) Update: The celebration featured an important update on EPO's efforts to promote Environmental Diversity and Inclusion (ED&I) within the organization and the broader environmental movement. Attendees gained insights into the initiatives aimed at fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in environmental advocacy, ensuring that all voices are heard and represented. 3.   DEC Area Clean-up: A highlight of the event was the DEC area clean-up activity, where participants joined forces to remove litter and restore the natural beauty of the surrounding environment. The clean-up effort not only beautified the area but also served as a powerful reminder of the importance of community engagement in environmental stewardship. 4.   Huge Participation: The overwhelming participation by the EPO staff and Sr Leaders underscored the shared commitment to environmental sustainability and the collective desire to make a positive impact on our planet. 5.   Activity Round Applying Green Principles: Attendees also engaged in activity designed to apply green principles in practical ways into construction projects. Key take-aways were demonstrations of several renewable energy technologies. Participants gained valuable knowledge and skills to integrate sustainability into their daily lives and professional endeavors. Green Living Projects has been around since 2008 and always had the ambition to support the built environment industry with the challenge to reduce its environmental footprint. We worked mostly with LEED as a tool to work on that challenge. 16 years later, we believe the way LEED is applied in the industry is not leading to the changes our world needs. So we decided to stop being a green building consultant. Instead, we will be offering something entirely different. From the outside this may seem like a sudden event. In reality, this is the outcome of a process that started several years ago. It included going through the different stages of grief and the emotional drainage caused by the huge gap between what our world needs and what the actual outcome was of our work. Despite the occasional proclamation of high ambitions, few clients showed willingness to forego first cost considerations. Despite the celebrations of sustainable certification outcomes, no real progress to real-world needs has been made. Even LEED V5 is not going to change that. As part of our developmental culture, we deepened our understanding of living systems science and how this applies to the organization of work. We started applying this understanding on ourselves and our own organization which helped us understand the adaptive challenge ahead of us. This has now led to a very different value proposition. I recently read the book "The Water Knife", by Paolo Bacigalupi. In it, he depicts the concept of arcology buildings. In the book, these highly coveted buildings are self-sufficient and resilient, and the only healthy, inhabitable structures in much of the US that has been ravaged by climate change. While we all hope and pray this doesn’t become our fate, it is a model of what sustainable building design could look like. The new LEED v5 rating system is a step forward in the green building movement, and it could be used to create arcology buildings in the real world. LEED v5 provides clear guidance on how to design and operate sustainable buildings that are low-carbon, healthy, resilient, and equitable. I believe that the LEED v5 rating system could help to make arcology buildings a reality. By providing clear guidance on how to design and operate sustainable buildings, LEED v5 can help to reduce the environmental impact of our built environment.
