Manufacturing technology start-up HELIXX is aiming to enable customers to build mini commercial Electric Vehicles (EVs) anywhere in the world and has unveiled its first demonstrator vehicle. Designed, built and manufactured with the help of Siemens Xcelerator portfolio of industry software, the Helixx delivery van is designed for ease of assembly and optimum interior load space, addressing the needs of both manufacturers and fleet operators in one mission-specific mobility solution. When it enters production in 2024, it will be accompanied by a pick-up truck for the construction industry, and open-body and a closed-body passenger vehicles for ride-hailing fleets. Steve Pegg, Helixx CEO and co-founder said “As engineers and designers, we were determined to never lose sight of how and where Helixx vehicles will be produced. We deprogrammed our mindset away from conventional design principles to challenge the complexities of legacy manufacturing systems. We developed this demonstration vehicle to prove and stress-test the global replicability of our digital-first approach. The vehicle visually represents what licensed Helixx Mobility Hubs can produce in as little as 180 days from initial site survey to vehicles rolling out onto the street, offering subscribers access from $0.25 per hour. What does Offsite need to do to become a credible and viable alternative to ‘traditional’ building? Thank you, Offsite Alliance, Develop Consulting, O’Dwyer Steel for bringing this small group together to explore and compare lessons that can be learned from the automobile industry. The tour of the BMW Mini factory showcased its impressive capability to produce 1,000 cars per day with 160,000 variations, which customers can configure and order online to their specifications, all assembled on one production line. The tour included a brief overview of the body factory complex, which spans 1 million square feet and employs 60 humans and 105 precision robots, with a total of 1,200 robots used across the factories. Together, they assemble 475 parts into the body shell of each car, incorporating 6,000 spot welds and 200 metal studs. BMW is committed to lean, green, and digital manufacturing. The factory features 12,000 solar panels on its roof, exporting 90% of the generated energy back to the national grid. Additionally, 99% of the factory's material waste is recyclable, and at the end of a car's life, 80% of it is recyclable. The assembly factory's conveyor track is 14 km long (8.69 miles) and 700 humans, and it takes 22 hours to build each car from scratch. Once assembled, each car is driven off the production line and tested on a rolling road and indoor track, ensuring it is ready for delivery across the UK and export to 110 countries, in both left-hand and right-hand drive configurations. In comparison, how does the construction industry fare? Recently, several MMC have attempted to standardise their delivery solutions volumetrically, but many have failed, with some even developing their own configurators. To replicate the success of the automobile industry, the construction playbook is a useful starting point for MMC. Utilising a kit-of-parts approach and bringing those components onto a shared platform offers many advantages, as highlighted by Develop Consulting currently working across a range of industries. Buildeco's kit-of-parts housing remains defect-free at handover and even three and half years later, proving the effectiveness of this approach. The BMW factory visit left me with fond memories of my family's Minis and the London to Brighton run. The classic e-cargo bike just got a makeover Our friends at DYNAMIC DRIVES Giessen have taken an original manufacturing approach to the classic cargo bike. Their latest model, the Intelectra e-cargo bike, is the picture of innovative design thinking brought to life. Unlike other conventional cargo bikes, the Inelectra bike frame forgoes traditional welding methods. Instead the continuous cast profiles of its frame are welded with forged and milled nodes that enable higher precision. This means the Intelectra is lightweight without compromising strength. Successful product tests stretched the bikes payload capabilities up to 500kg! One of the best parts of the Intelectra model is its Serial Hybrid System (iSHS). This hybrid and propulsive generator system means the Intelectra e-cargo bike is completely belt and chain free. The iSHS technology takes full advantage of the bikes power inputs, and works to also generate locomotive power. Dynamic Drives have made a common light-vehicle into a commercially viable machine. Our battery swapping stations and networks support the interchangeable battery system employed by Dynamic Drives in their Intelectra models.
