Storytime: Hiring Kieren 👨 Back in February 2020, we hired Kieren as a graphic designer through a special program. But when COVID-19 hit and the program got cancelled, Kieren was left without a job. Despite the uncertainty, we decided to keep him on board. This leap of faith led to unexpected opportunities, including discovering Kieren's talent for designing websites. It's a reminder that sometimes in business, taking a risk can pay off big time. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eM5nDFXZ #expos #event #events #networking #networkingtips #eventtips #marketing #marketingtips

This hasn't been the easiest year, as far as my career goes. I felt like I was on top in January, celebrating nearly 8 years at GameSpot as a journalist before I was a casualty of mass layoffs from Fandom. I made a tough decision: to switch careers at the age of 41. I had a few gigs as a copywriter, and I didn't feel like it was for me. Then, I was offered a communications contract job through a friend's sister at Meow Wolf. This changed everything for me. I was given the tools to succeed in this profession through some fantastic coworkers and a great leader with Didi Bethurum. Every single person I came in contact with at the company welcomed me with open arms and taught me what I need to know about this profession. It was a giant learning curve, as I was a journalist for over a decade, and, but there was never a point where I didn't feel like part of the team. So thanks Kati Murphy for opening the door, and thanks to Connor Gray, Erin Barnes, Gleana Albritton, Dave Jasmon, Monique Griffin, Phil Jones, and Didi for working with me and taking the time to get me on the same page with the rest of Meow Wolf. I love it here. Change is terrifying, but I'm glad that I had so many good, talented, brilliant people to teach me the ropes when I was at a point where I didn't know where to go next in my career. You're all so rad. #careerdevelopment #changingcareers #writing #copywriting #communications

Empowering Tech-driven startups for growth | Clean UI/UX and No-Code solutions | Turning Designs into Revenue-Boosting Engines
Looking for past work & portfolio is important while hiring But what’s even more important is the candidate’s inherent disposition. i.e. their attitude, behavior, and overall character. 🫂 While building Aumbre Studio's talent bench, my 1st shortlisting criteria was having the right attitude and mindset. Allocated 70% time to that. ⌛ Because a person with the right attitude but lacking experience can easily be trained and aligned with organizational ethics. But if someone has attitude issues, it’s hard to harmonize every day. 😔 Consider it like sports. 🏏 An athlete's stats set a performance baseline, but chemistry and drive determine the squad's success. Similarly, an employee's skillset establishes their individual capability, but cultural harmony and collective orientation propels the organization forward. #uiux #designstudio #teambuilding #workculture #webdesign

User researcher at The National Lottery Community Fund | User research, user experience, digital transformation | #uxrunningpunk
Struggling a bit this morning. But your resident #uxrunningpunk isn't afraid of a bit of struggle. The struggle is central to all that we do. It has to be, because it's far too easy to give up. I could have given up yesterday, but I dug deep and kept going. I finished up after two hours with 17.1k on the clock. It hurt, but I'm so close to half marathon distance I can almost smell it (or maybe that was just my kit, I dunno). I could have given up on the job hunt, but I didn't. Instead, I dug deep. I kept applying, kept leveraging my network, kept studying my practice. It's taken me to six first stage interviews and one second stage interview. No offers yet, though. The rejections hurt, but I'm so close to being a #userresearcher again I can almost hear the research sessions. I've been #opentowork for three months now, working on getting back to #userresearch, and there is one thing I know for certain. I'm on the bench, but it's not down to a lack of hard work and struggle. I wrote on Friday about not succumbing to needless compromise. I'm sticking by that, and so should you. Time to lace up our kicks and get started on another week of dazzling potential employers. You up for it? ----- I'm Marc, the #uxrunningpunk, and YOU need me doing YOUR #uxresearch. I'm this driven and this good, so put me to work and find out. C'mon, it'll be fun. #uxresearcher (Image: a pair of blue Mizuno road running shoes, covered in dirt.)

What have you been doing to stay relevant in the industry during your layoff? I’m doing what I’ve always been doing—doing my part to making everybody else in the industry relevant while building my network. Whether it’s covering a panel at Anime Expo, interviewing developers and providing real-time feedback going hands-on with games at Summer Game Fest, continuing to build my network and acquire knowledge at the Game Developers Conference, or simply writing a review of a game from the comfort of my room, I live and breathe this industry. While I’m pitching the big publications in the hopes of a paid article here and there, I do all of this for SmashPad at a loss and have been for almost 20 years. As a simple portfolio piece, I don’t monetize and I don’t advertise because I want my content to be as real as it gets. I’m intelligent, I learn quickly, I care about what I do, I do good work, and I’m proud of it. Take a chance on the guy that loves it so much, he suffers, and I think I’ve suffered enough. I’m ready to be the best decision a company has ever made. — Like my content? Imagine what I can do professionally. #HireMe I’m a recently displaced Community Management, Social Media, and Communications professional who spent the last 7 years with EA and Glu Mobile. I also currently run SmashPad.com as its Head of Content as a passion project. I’m seeking a new role in the hashtag #gamingindustry or #tech that’ll utilize my skills in writing and/or communications, and I’m also entertaining requests and ideas to consult on gaming-related projects, guest host podcasts, or participate on a panelist or speak at industry events.
