Would you say that 1 4 equals 4 1? If you asked Eugenia Cheng, mathematician and author of “Is Math Real?”, she might say “well, yes and no.” Dr. Cheng says “There’s always a sense in which the two sides [of a useful equation] are equal and also a sense in which the two sides are not equal.” Both 1 4 and 4 1 equal 5. But, if you asked a small child using their fingers to count, starting with 4 fingers and adding 1 more would be much easier than starting with 1 finger and adding 4. Yes, the outcome is the same. But, the process for getting to the outcome is different. This made me think about my coaching clients whose goal is to get better at delegating or sharing work. They may say, “That’s not the process I’d follow.” If we apply what Dr. Cheng is sharing, it's possible to arrive at the same outcome via different processes - and be richer for it!
