The construction of polders was mostly undertaken by abbeys in Flanders to expand the agricultural land, and later expanded so as to accommodate the increasing population. Flanders, as a low-lying region, has a long history in managing flood risks and protecting its coastline, and this Singapore International Water Week (SIWW), Flanders Investment & Trade (FIT) is bringing in some of the best in coastal and flood protection from Flanders! On Wednesday, July 10, the Kawartha watershed experienced a wide range of precipitation due to the remnants of Hurricane Beryl. Northern areas, particularly Indian Point Provincial Park, recorded over 50mm of rainfall. In contrast, southern areas, including Port Perry and Blackstock, received between 23.2mm and 33.2mm. This variation underscores the importance of comprehensive monitoring systems to enhance our understanding of the impacts of significant weather events across our watershed. 💙 Renaturalising the course of our rivers is a crucial step to restoring natural river processes within our freshwater environments. In doing so, we unlock a bounty of benefits, from increased habitat opportunties for fish and invertebrates to helping reduce downstream flood risk. 💪 We are working with landowners up and down the catchment, to explore where these more ambitious schemes might be possible. The Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) based map created from the data collected by the Kawartha Region Conservation Authority (KRCA) is a powerful tool for visualizing and understanding precipitation patterns across the region. In the context of the KRCA’s data, the map provides a detailed, granular view of precipitation levels across different areas. Each point on the map represents a specific location where data is collected, and the IDW algorithm is used to estimate precipitation levels at every other point on the map based on the known values. This results in a smooth surface that represents the spatial distribution of precipitation across the region. High and low precipitation areas are clearly visible, allowing for effective monitoring and forecasting of weather patterns. Because it is a rain-fed river, the discharges can fluctuate greatly: low discharges of 10 m³/s occur during long dry periods, but during an extreme high water, 3,000 m³/s can roar through the Border Meuse. Under such conditions, the river is able to transport large quantities of gravel and sand. The project area is the 50-km-long, unimpeded section of the Border Meuse on the Belgian-Dutch border between Maastricht and Maaseik.

Today is World Environment Day. 🌍🌿 This year's theme and call to action- focusing on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience- strongly resonate with the mission of our program. Among the many challenges our environment is faced with, the impacts of climate-related events, such as extreme precipitation events, high river discharges, and prolonged droughts, are increasingly being felt across regions, calling for urgent action. To contribute to this, at JCAR ATRACE, we aim to share and strengthen the common knowledge base on extreme floods and droughts for regional waters. Our programme is rooted in cooperation, and this is our message on today's #WorldEnvironmentDay: together, we can work towards addressing those challenges and protecting the environment.

MERLIN case study 15 "Tzipori catchment", focuses on the restoration of a small Mediterranean stream, approximately 32 kilometers long, in the #Tzipori watershed in Israel. The river faces significant ecological stressors, including water abstraction, channel modification, sewage pollution, and intensive agricultural land use.
