Yesterday, Tilray Brands, Inc. announced it would acquire 8 craft breweries and beverage brands from AB InBev for $85 million in cash. But it’s not the brands that are most critical to Tilray—it's their national production and distribution network. Buying the collection for near pennies-on-the-dollar is an incredible deal as Tilray’s strategic interest in them appears to stem from the scale, synergies, and manufacturing capacity they can provide the company’s broader beverage-alcohol business. The network of production and distribution that these brands have would also benefit Tilray’s cannabis and CBD divisions should federal legalization occur. Of course the timeline for that is debatable, but Tilray has long hoped to find legal intersections between its U.S. craft beverages and cannabis business divisions. There are plenty of bottle caps on the shelves designed to inject a powder or a liquid in your beverage, still or carbonated. It's used in particular in the pharmaceutical industry, sport and better for you category (last minute injection of functional benefits...!) I have explored this opportunity for beer for many years. Between the cost, the waste generated, the complexity and the gimmicky benefit we never launched anything. But here we go for the first of its kind. Glenlivet (Pernod Ricard) is disrupting the premix/RTD category coming with an elevated cocktail proposition. Twist the cap and a natural compound of ingredients is added to the Whiskey to create a freshly made Manhattan or Old Fashioned. Designed at cocktail strength (40% ish) and in a smaller format 375ml. Do consumer really believe that a last minute addition of something that has been stored in a bottle cap is fresher and better than a perfectly premixed beverage.... Interesting! (Note that a classic Manhattan and Old Fashioned is usually made with Rye Whiskey or American Bourbon...)
