Heat pumps have proven to be a key tool in the global transition to #cleanenergy and have been identified as the most important future heating technology in several #netzero scenarios.   Researchers now presented evidence that #heatpumps are proven to exceed efficiency of gas boilers, even when temperatures drop below freezing.   Their study also highlights the high adoption per household of this technology by countries with colder climates like #Finland and #Norway: “These countries have installed heat pumps for decades and see the highest heat pump penetration both in terms of existing fleet and new sales.”   Our portfolio company Vamo accelerates Germany's #heating transition by focusing on heat pumps. Exciting news! Hitachi air-to-water heat pumps have been included in the European Heat Pump Awards 2023 as part of the project for Thortons Quarry, Sustainable Homes, helping provide 43 new build residencies with quality and services that represent a high level of sustainability. Some of the main requirements of the project were: 1- High level of sustainability and future-proofing of these homes. 2- Enable the developer to reduce overall groundworks and infrastructure along with a reduction of Co2 emissions by omitting the need of gas pipework and associated equipment. 3- System consumptions should be as low as possible, in order to avoid wasting energy. 4- Comfort. Preferred multi zonal underfloor heating and radiators for Winter heating. All of which Hitachi air-to-water heat pumps were able to provide a solution for, and more. SUPPORT OF THE LAKE DISTRICT NATIONAL PARK’S NET ZERO AMBITIONS!   Brockhole on Windermere introduced a combination of renewable technologies to support the Lake District National Park’s net zero ambitions. At the heart of this was a 130kW water sourced heat pump to replace an existing gas fired heating and hot water system. An alternative to boreholes, trenches or lake loops is our ThermoGenius™ heat collectors. A more compact and cost- effective solution that can be positioned beneath the jetty 170 metres from the plant room. Due to their patented design, ThermoGenius™ M units produce minimal pressure drop across each unit leading to greater system efficiencies.    Solution: Heat pump – Dimplex 130kW Heat source – Lake Windermere Heat collector – 7 x ThermoGenius™ M3   The system has now been running through two full range of seasonal conditions. Space heating and hot water performance is excellent with a seasonal coefficient of performance (SCOP) close to 5 being returned by the heat pump. This is a great article that highlights the top 10 advantages of electric process heating versus traditional hydrocarbon fired heaters. In addition to virtually eliminating scope 1 emissions on site, electric heaters provide higher efficiency and greater control.

#Heat #pumps are probably the most economical solution for future #climate-#neutral heating, particularly when deployed centrally with #heating #grids. Berit Hanna Czock, Oliver Ruhnau, and I draw this conclusion in our new #working #paper: “A heated debate – The future cost-efficiency of climate-neutral heating options under consideration of heterogeneity and uncertainty”. We investigate in a case study for Germany which heating technologies are cost-efficient in a future climate-neutral energy system, given uncertainties in energy, technology, and infrastructure costs and heterogeneous settlement types and buildings. Infrastructure investment decisions have to be made today because the transformation towards new infrastructure might take decades. To me, the most interesting conclusions for policy makers are: ① The decision between decentral and central heat pumps requires a case-by-case analysis. In Germany, making this choice should be the focus of the municipal heating planning (#Kommunale #Wärmeplanung) processes, which are due in 2028. ② #Hydrogen boilers can be economical in rural settlements and villages, BUT ③ Given the high #uncertainty in the future hydrogen price and grid costs, hydrogen boilers seem to be a more risky option than heat pumps, which are less exposed to increased energy and infrastructure costs due to their high coefficient of performance ④ Synthetic natural gas does not seem economical despite the fact that #SNG could utilize existing infrastructure in the short term. Two things are about to end fossil fuel use, because they enable homeowners to use their own energy flexibly. Vehicle to Grid Bidirectional EV charging. This means electricity can enter a parked car wherever it’s parked, and then can also sell power wherever it’s parked. So wherever there is too much solar energy or wind energy a car can save it for 4-7 days. Plug and play water to water heat pumps. This means you can harvest hot water from a fireplace hydronic loop, ground source loop, solar thermal loop, waste heat loop, and upgrade it for storage in any size container. Plus it can provide chilling water for any fridge, server farm, or summer home. So we have solar which peaks at noon, and wind that peaks at night. Balanced by cars, and then by heat pumps to provide storage of any size, just limited by volume and temperature. It could be a single hot water heater or even a reservoir pond. Today we are burying servers in the ocean, and cooling nuclear and coal plants with rivers. We can do the same thing with heat pumps, but actually run the process in reverse too. We are so caught up in a 1:1 swap of unidirectional flow of power and energy. But networked bidirectional transactions for thermal and electricity make the whole system much more efficient. So our current 100 Quad BTU primary energy system that boils down to 10kW per person may be able to get close to 3kW when we eliminate waste, and 1kW when we innovate around bidirectional peer to peer energy trading networks instead of fuel and power one way monopolies.

𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞-𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐟 𝐍𝐨𝐰 – 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 The single most effective way to decarbonize your building will be to replace your fossil fuel burning heat source with a commercial heat pump powered by renewable electricity. Generally speaking, heat pumps alone are unlikely to meet the calorific demand satisfied by an oil or gas-powered heat source. Additional fabric improvements will be required to reduce demand enough for a heat pump to meet the performance requirements. Fabric upgrades could include secondary glazing or glazing unit upgrades and improved insulation to external walls and roof.   Interested?
