The company reported producing 80.6 million metric tons for the three months ending in June and projects its annual production for 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝟯𝟭𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟯𝟮𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝗻𝘀. Vale's strong Q2 performance was driven by the efficiency of its S11D and Vargem Grande mining complexes in Brazil. Iron ore sales for the quarter increased by 7.3% year-on-year, totaling 79.8 million tons, bolstered by inventory sales. Analysts from Santander highlighted that 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗲'𝘀 𝗿𝗼𝗯𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗘𝗕𝗜𝗧𝗗𝗔 𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿. On a different note, Vale's nickel production saw a 24.4% decrease year-on-year, amounting to 27,900 tons. With more of our sites to come, and more and more mining companies signing-up, there's going to be a steady drum beat of reports coming through (and acknowledging the reports from SQM and Albermarle lithium operations last year). IRMA reports provide the most detailed public account of mine site ESG performance currently available. It will be really interesting to see how communities, civil society, customers and investors start to use the information and data produced by IRMA audits as the number of published reports grows.

Nexa's 2023 results are now available! Over the last year, we have taken big steps towards our ESG goals: we received a new rating from the CPD (Carbon Disclosure Project), from C to B; we advanced the dry waste disposal system at the Três Marias (MG) smelter; and we were recognized as “Company of the Year - Mining Sector 2023” by Brasil Mineral magazine. As for financial results, we achieved an adjusted EBITDA of US$391 million and consolidated net revenue of US$2.573 million, numbers impacted by metal prices on the LME (London Metal Exchange). Furthermore, driven by the advancement of operations at the Aripuanã mine (MT), zinc production increased by 12% compared to 2022, reaching 333 thousand tons in 2023. Despite the challenging scenario, we closed the year achieving guidance with strong financial and operational discipline. Looking deeper into the meaning of BHP’s acquisition attempts of Anglo American, one thing becomes evident: the dreams of a just green transition may not come true so easily. The failed deal brought the impending shortage of critical metals, such as copper, needed for the transition, to the attention of the broader market. In my view, this perfectly demonstrates a lack of real investment ideas to increase the production of necessary materials, even among market leaders. After all, M&As are merely movements of mineral reserves from one company’s balance sheet to the other. To address the coming deficit of metals and minerals needed for the low carbon transition (at least in the mid-term), vast investments need to be channelled into the exploration and expansion of existing mines. After a decade of structural underinvestment within the mining sector, companies require major financial support of long-term capital. Rio Tinto aims for 323mn-338mn t of Australian iron ore https://lnkd.in/gcc9ZhK7 UK-Australian mining firm Rio Tinto expects to ship 323mn-338mn t of #ironore in 2024 in Western Australia (WA) compared with a target of 328mn-335mn in 2023 but is producing more low-grade ore. Rio Tinto warned that its low-grade SP10 products will reach 45mn-50mn t in 2023 or 13-15pc of all WA ore iron ore sales. This is up from 35.42mn t or 11pc of total in 2022, with an increase in SP10 sales in the second half of 2023. SP10 made up 10pc of Rio Tinto's WA iron ore sales during January-June 2023. SP10 could be an even bigger part of Rio Tinto's sales mix in 2024 if this increase continues. The firm requires more high-grade replacement Pilbara mines to lift the average grade of its sales from WA and to allow it to increase to its mid-term target of 345mn-360mn t of shipments from the state on a 100pc basis. But that is being impeded by longer approvals processes for new WA mines, which have blown out to around four years from three years in 2018 and two years in 2003, chief executive of iron ore Simon Trott told analysts on a site visit this week. #ferrous #steelmaking #steelfeedstocks #metals
