On Friday, June 14th, Valley headquarters proudly hosted a community event in celebration of Juneteenth. At Valley, we're deeply committed to fostering a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, and Juneteenth is an opportunity for us to honor and learn from these values. The event featured powerful remarks from Valley Board Member, Rev. Dr. Sidney S. Williams, Jr., and Alliah Agostini, the talented author of "The Juneteenth Story" and "The Juneteenth Cookbook." Their insights and stories resonated deeply, reminding us of the significance of this day. It's moments like these that underscore the importance of coming together as a community. Part of what makes community-driven work meaningful is the people who we have the privilege to work with. On Friday, June 28th, we celebrated a big milestone – 2 years of collaboration, grassroots community projects, and a growing network of partners across North Dakota and Minnesota. I could talk all day about how much the business world can learn from anthropology. I'm preparing lots of content on this because I became literally *obsessed* while I was at university. I just couldn't believe I was learning more about brand and community strategy in my Cultural Studies minor, even if they didn’t call it that way, than in most of my business modules. The Cultural Iceberg is a great example of this. We tend to throw around the word 'culture' in marketing and business without really thinking about its implications. But in anthropology, they are very much aware of how complex it is. Just defining culture is an endless debate. The iceberg is a very smart way of visualising this complexity. As Rose says, there are layers upon layers. Without considering all of them, you will not understand a culture, a community. And any strategy starts there - in the understanding. This image caught our eye - look at how much is below the surface. This giant space of the inner world which is impacting how we address not only community and culture but also how we feel about ourselves, our work and our relationships around us from our bosses to the company itself. We often forget that to build culture or improve learning outcomes or just to have a happier more productive workforce we need to help our teams and talent to understand what might be going on below the surface - even hidden to themselves. HR and L&D teams - if your suppliers aren't helping you navigate the waters below you need to ask why. This is beyond the AI discussion and better curation or just giving support to senior individuals - it's about having the right powerful tools that have been designed to work at scale across your organisation that helps unlock access to this world below and help people through the challenges or blockers that might be holding back the space for culture and teams to flourish - ultimately helping your companies evolve healthier. Why gather? ➡️ Feeling connected to others is not just a basic human need, it’s crucial for our physical and mental health — and the health of our communities. It seems there are fewer and fewer actual public places that enable us to get to know one another and build the relationships, trust, and collaborations that society needs to thrive, let alone function. It’s hard — but necessary. ➡️ There is so much that keeps us apart as Americans, and it can feel countercultural and intimidating to get to know people outside of our bubbles. A dangerous feedback loop can spin out of control when we distance ourselves from others... and then lose the muscle to be in community with people unlike ourselves. But we are all yearning to feel part of something, to feel less fear, to feel like we belong. We can't let this feedback loop happen. Try this. ➡️ Become a gathering engineer. Pay attention to the kids of connection your community is yearning for and sketch out what public, purposeful gathering places could exist. It could be a swap meet, a BBQ at the county fair, a program at your library, a Memorial Day potluck, a community garden workshop… gatherings can (and should!) fit with the culture of your place. In a groundbreaking book based on vast data, Putnam shows how we have become increasingly disconnected from family, friends, neighbors, and our democratic structures– and how we may reconnect. Putnam warns that our stock of social capital – the very fabric of our connections with each other, has plummeted, impoverishing our lives and communities. Putnam draws on evidence including nearly 500,000 interviews over the last quarter century to show that we sign fewer petitions, belong to fewer organizations that meet, know our neighbors less, meet with friends less frequently, and even socialize with our families less often. We’re even bowling alone. More Americans are bowling than ever before, but they are not bowling in leagues. Putnam shows how changes in work, family structure, age, suburban life, television, computers, women’s roles, and other factors have contributed to this decline.
