UpLink and the Forum's First Movers Coalition are calling for start-ups working on decarbonizing aviation. In the Flying-V – originally an idea of Justus Benad during his thesis project at Airbus Hamburg – the passenger cabin, cargo hold and fuel tanks are integrated in its wing structure. The design is not as long as an Airbus A350, but it has the same wing span. This allows the Flying-V to use the present infrastructure at airports, such as gates and runways. The Flying-V carries about the same number of passengers -  314 in the standard configuration – and the same amount of cargo, 160 m3. Project leader at TU Delft, Dr. Roelof Vos: “The Flying-V is smaller than the A350 and has less inflow surface area compared to the available amount of volume. The result is less resistance. That means the Flying-V needs less fuel for the same distance.” The Flying-V is a design for a highly energy-efficient long-distance aeroplane. The aircraft’s design integrates the passenger cabin, the cargo hold and the fuel tanks in the wings, creating a spectacular v-shape. ✈ [SUSTAINABLE AVIATION] The AeroMAPS tool, developed by two ISAE-SUPAERO researchers, Scott Delbecq and Thomas Planès, can be used to assess the environmental impact of air transport and the effectiveness or limitations of levers for decarbonizing the sector. Initially designed for research and training purposes, it now serves as a multidisciplinary platform for experts and decision-makers from institutions, industry, and associations. Its development has been integrated into the work of the Institute for Sustainable Aviation (ISA), a collaborative research institute initiated by Laurent Joly, head of research for sustainable aviation, which aims to address the transition to #lowcarbon #aviation in all its complexity. By playing on the sector’s transition levers, AeroMAPS users can define the scenarios whose impacts they wish to analyze. For example, the introduction of new aircraft types, the use of new fuels or the rate of growth in air traffic. AeroMAPS is the first air transport scenario simulation platform built on an open-source scientific methodology. It was initially designed and developed to enable researchers to explore air transport transition scenarios in detail. It was soon integrated into training programs: first as part of the ISAE-SUPAERO engineering curriculum, then as part of continuing education programs. To see the bigger picture, the two researchers added a socio-economic dimension to their tool (via a thesis conducted by Antoine Salgas, a doctoral student on the project, in partnership with TBS Education), and subsequently, a traffic and emissions inventory, enabling the analyses made with AeroMAPS to be partitioned and regionalized: the AeroSCOPE tool, created as part of a collaboration with the Dutch university Delft University of Technology. Today, AeroMAPS' comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach is a decision-making aid for the entire aeronautics ecosystem, as well as for institutional, industrial and association decision-makers. As an Aerospace engirneering student, one of the most inspiring ways to build and design new aircrafts is to look at the nature and get inspired by it. We understand that this world is thousend years old, and we are only a small part of it.Thats why biomimicry (imitating nature’s best-kept secrets) as Airbus says, could help solve a variety of aviation challenges. Those are, for example: The way geese fly formating v shape (giving the geese behind free lift), eagle’s wing and tail structure (features individually controlled feathers that provide active flight control), the Dragonfly (that gives inspiration from his incredible vision and intelligent flight capabilities) or even shark's dorsal fins (that work exactly like the vertical stabiliser wing on an aircraft, giving it exceptional manoeuvrability). Even some of the current used technologies, inspired by birds, are already implemented on aircrafts, such as winglets. These ‘mini wings’ help cancel drag-inducing vortices - whirls of air - that form as air skirts around the wing tips. In conclusion, the nature can teach and inspire us a lot, and those tools will definetly help us in inventing and designing new aircrafts. That’s faster and more creative than if everyone was researching isolated from one another. That’s the big advantage of ZAL TechCenter.   ❔How does Hamburg support ZAL as a center for innovation? ⏩Hamburg has supported ZAL since day one, in fact the idea came from the City of Hamburg who founded ZAL in 2008. Back then it was already clear that we wanted to focus on hydrogen, back then the idea was for a fuel cell lab, and Hambgurg supported it from the beginning. And that means that there’s so much enthusiasm and support from the city for ZAL. The aim is to nurture and expand the world’s 3rd largest civil aviation cluster. And the best way to do that is to start at the beginning, with new technologies and innovations. That lets us create new jobs along the whole process chain. This is why the City of Hamburg supports us.   ❔What's attractive about a career in aviation? ⏩In aviation, you can be part of developing the future. We’re looking for good engineers, motivated developers, technologists, researchers to help shape this field and to solve problems. We’re convinced that technology helps us make a better future. Air travel must change, other forms of transport are changing to become more climate-friendly. Aviation has to keep up, we can’t stay the same, carry on burning the same fuels. Those a big challenges, and that makes it very exciting to work on them. How can we make green aircraft, how can we change things so that people like flying again, that they can fly with a good conscience? 📣 Kasaero GmbH is pleased to announce the official launch of the joint LuFo Project RECOMPILE. At the end of June, Kasaero GmbH, along with partners Fraunhofer IGCV and TUM - Chair of Carbon Composites, gathered in Augsburg for the project’s kick-off meeting. 🤝 The aim of this project is to develop a new method for designing redundant structures for #eVTOLs, #airplanes, and #helicopters. #Aviation certification regulations mandate redundant structures, but conventional aviation system architectures and construction methods struggle to meet these requirements without increasing weight and costs. By examining two structural components, we will explore new design methods, system architectures, and principles, and evaluate them using a digital, model-driven design methodology. Our goal is to enhance aviation safety and environmental friendliness through an automated development process that considers certification requirements.   🎯 In this project, Kasaero GmbH will play a crucial role, working closely with our consortium partners to develop and validate these innovative technologies. "📢 Just wrapped up an incredible session on aircraft interior acoustics at DAGA (German Acoustical Society) today! 🛩️🎧 I had the privilege of presenting our #Active_noise_reduction Experiment measurement results and test setup from groundbreaking research conducted at the Automotive and Aeronautical Engineering @HAW Hamburg HCAT, Hamburg Center of Aviation Training . 🚀🔬 We focused on tonal noise of low frequency using Active noise control system in the cabin. 🌟 The conference was a perfect platform to exchange knowledge and ideas with fellow experts in the field of #Acoustic. 🤝✨ I'm immensely grateful to my brilliant co-authors, Mr. Dipl. Ing. In the future, flying will be different than it is today. Climate change means fundamental change for the aviation industry. We need new fuels, new technologies and new infrastructure. In Hamburg, we’re helping to reshape aviation and to build a decarbonized future. To accelerate innovation, we’ve built ZAL Center of Applied Aeronautical Research. It’s a unique R&D facility created jointly by industry, researchers and policymakers and is one of the leading research centres in the world. Here, partners like Airbus and German Aerospace Center (DLR) are developing the future of flying, including new types of aircraft and engines powered by liquid hydrogen with zero CO2 emissions. Hamburg Airport is investing EUR 250 million to become the first major airport in Germany to operate without any CO2 emissions by 2035. The City of #Hamburg supports unique research projects such as the Hydrogen Aviation Lab. Led by Lufthansa Technik, the project uses a retired A320 to solve issues around H2 refuelling, to make it as safe and economic as refuelling kerosene. Meanwhile Hamburg is pioneering the hydrogen economy, investing in the construction of pipelines, #electrolysers and import facilities for hydrogen.
