Going to college can be a daunting and scary experience, especially for first-generation students. Statistics suggest roughly a quarter of first-generation college students graduate with four-year degrees. In order to minimize barriers to education, the Roaring Fork School PreCollegiate program is on a mission to provide personal mentoring to support and motivate students to pursue higher education. The local nonprofit reports 98-99% of its students move into post-secondary programming after high school and students have a 100% graduation rate from its participants. https://lnkd.in/gRqc6UdR

Not just black parents, but all parents want and should have the FREEDOM, financial freedom, to choose the education option that the parents consider better for their children (even if not actually better). The US Supreme Court provides parents with the fundamental constitutional right to make decisions for their children so long as NOT causing HARM (which means parents are not required to pass some "best" or "better" test to have the right to decide). Parents: consider NOT arguing that you know what is best for your children. You might, but, good news, you don't have to know! Those who claim you should not make decisions for your children are basing those arguments on false positions! In my role as an administrator, I worked on one of the most rewarding projects. I spearheaded the implementation of a summer reading program in an urban school district. The project began with research and outreach with the local community to understand their needs and concerns regarding literacy. We reviewed the data, visited sites in other cities, and collaborated with local leaders to gather input and build support for the initiative. After gaining community buy-in, we worked closely with the faith community and other partners to design a comprehensive summer literacy program tailored to the area's unique characteristics. This involved collaboration with the Children’s Defense Fund, establishing partnerships, and developing educational materials to raise awareness about the importance of literacy. Through strategic partnerships with local businesses and organizations, we were able to secure funding and resources to support the program's implementation. Over time, the program gained momentum, with increasing participation from students and families. We saw tangible improvements in attendance, discipline, and literacy skills. The success of the Childrens Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom Schools® program not only had a positive impact on the community but also fostered a sense of pride and empowerment among community members who played a role in its implementation. It served as a model for community engagement, inspiring similar initiatives in neighboring areas. Overall, the project was a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and grassroots mobilization in creating positive change at the local level. It reinforced my belief in the importance of proactive and inclusive approaches to addressing literacy. I know we left a legacy because the faith community continues to implement the CDF Freedom Schools® program today. What is your legacy? How did National Education Week come about? Originated in 1921, it launched to address shortcomings in the American public education system. "Repost with your thoughts” Where to begin? When this year is over, will I have a story to tell. At the halfway point. I must self-gloss on the hump crossed by myself, the filmmaking team and our organization. "We", Ben Scholle , Sam Chegini , Alexander Elmore , Isaiah Mancha and I not only “locked”Denverdocsoc's second civil rights documentary film, but "we" as an org unlocked a lot of minds to the power of non-narrative cinema and media literacy. The info is below, but we directly activated 1,200 DPS students over the 2023/24 school year. Colorado is set to let loose a three year "Enrichment" grant program. I am now seeking others who want to support our efforts in making Denver as well known for documentaries as we are murals (and I love murals {may even make a narrative about 'em}). I personally oversaw all of our education last year and interacted with more than 3,400 students. DPS serves a large, amazing, Hispanic population. When we shared documentary movies with the students it was powerful testament to how story is universal. It electrified and engaged all the students across all grades and cultures. My personal take? Students in K-12 are digital dependent but not digitally challenged (nor, sadly, digitally acknowledged in the positive). 2024 has been a rich and full year so far here at CFWLA. The continued generosity we received from you, our cherished community helped us start off the year well with two engaging 6-Week Faith Work Courses and a fantastic 8th Annual Faith Work Conference. We are still energized from our recent Framework Fellows Commissioning Ceremony and are looking forward to our fall plans including our next Reimagining Work event and God-willing the next Framework cohort.
