The reason transparency builds a stronger team? Trust. People are not stupid. The people you hire after several rounds on interviews (hopefully) less so. We know when we are not getting all the information. We know when things are being sugar coated. And we know when we are being told outright mistruths. If that is the pattern, you're setting up a culture of mistrust. Mistrust causes people to self-protect FIRST, then... maybe... help others. They avoid risks, wait to be told what to do (because thinking for themselves and acting without permission is risky), they deflect accountability, blame others, start rumors (to fill information gaps), and plan quiet exits. And just when you really need to reassure people that things are okay and get them excited about a new oppty...surprise! No one trusts it. When you hide information, the only person you are protecting is yourself. You're not protecting your team. You are leading through fear, your fear. If you really do believe that your team has a chance, your people aren't stupid, and your obstacles can be overcome... Then be honest. Be real. And be transparent. Without transparency, it's hard for anyone to see a future in which they belong.
