Next week is my 10 year anniversary at Secureworks. I have so many memories, so many experiences and a lot of lived lessons in my time across the organisation. In 2014 I never would have thought I would have 'made it' in cybersecurity, and the Counter Threat Unit was just a dream. With that in mind I was recently asked by Lisa Ventura MBE, if I could go back to those first days in industry, what would I have done differently or told myself. As I reflected, I decided I would have burst the bubble that you have to 'be technical' to have a space in cyber - You simply don't but it was something that stifled me for years. There is so much more to cybersecurity than hacking or coding (for example). But actually bigger than that note to self, I would have told myself to have the confidence to believe I could make it. I needed to embrace my authentic self, harness my skillsets such as being a keen organiser, being able to communicate and empathise, being open to learning particularly on-the-job, and my ability to dig deep even during the tough times. These are what on reflection made me feel successful, not a technical qualification or specific technical skill. So what would your message to self be? My recent week in Europe coincided with the kick-off of Cybersecurity Awareness Month. This year's theme is "Take Cybersecurity Action" which emphasizes the importance of individuals, organizations, and communities working together to build a safer digital future. Throughout the week, I spoke to many different cyber leaders about the opportunity to move the needle and take action around closing the talent gap. It takes great talent to build a safer digital future so let's remember to: o Focus on skills based hiring rather than requiring specific degrees o Commit to hiring a full spectrum diverse workforce – we know cybercriminals are diverse and in reality, diversity makes us stronger. o Ensure you have a robust plan for Ongoing Workforce Training – Cybercriminals aren’t slowing down so neither should we. It was great to be at Workforce Development Day at this year's Hack the Capitol! Thank you to Ron Gula for opening the event and to National Security Director Harry Coker, Jr. for his keynote remarks. To echo Director Coker, it will take all of us to address the new generation of threats that put the country’s critical infrastructure at risk. And with the emergence of AI it’s crucial that we stay ahead of this complex and evolving threat landscape. A strong cyber community is essential to our national security.  A shout-out to everyone who turned out for Workforce Development Day especially Kirsten Renner, Thomas VanNorman, CISSP, GICSP and Bryson Bort who helped organize the event with the incredible team at Accenture Federal Services. I highly recommend this book. Marc does a fantastic job of explaining cybersecurity threats for all businesses and persons. Real estate professionals will be familiar with the recent cyber threats with the Rapatoni MLS systems. After having read Marc's first book, The Coming Cyber War, I was not surprised at this.
