Join me in this narration, you can pick something from it. Few weeks back, i took BRT going to Ajah to alight at 1004 Housing Units. At Adeniji on the 3rd Mainland bridge, the bus got a fault and we had to have another alternative. After several attempts to get another car or bus we finally saw another BRT. 70 persons or so in the faulty bus rushed to this particular BRT that had decided to help us, I entered through the back door while majority were through the front door. After few minutes, I saw virtually all of the new joiners leaving the bus, an instinct was telling me to alight too but i had to shun and stay. Later, i discovered that the BRT was going to Obalende while my previous fellow commuters were all going to Ajah. Few lessons I learnt from the scenario. 1. The fact that majority were dropping doesnt give me room to drop. We are unique and different. What applies to A may have less concern on B. 2. The fact that majority are taking or not a direction does not mean you have to follow them (majority maybe wrong at times). 3. Have a direction. John L. Mason says that ' if you dont have a direction in life, all roads to you will lead to destination. Thank God I know where I am going. 4. Cave a plan out of unpleasantness- I planned to follow the bus to the place where I can get bus to further en route me cos on the bridge, you may stay for hours without getting one.

Do you remember when ACT Labor first announced that they would be introducing a new ticketing system for public transport? No? That’s because it was almost 10 years ago. And do you remember when they delivered it? No? That’s because they STILL haven’t. Despite saying they’ve got it ‘in storage, ready for roll out’ this year, this is just another fiasco in the farcical attempt by this government at delivering yet another project. How will they explain this latest stumble? By “announcing” ‘free public transport’ as a ‘cost of living relief’ measure? By blaming covid? By blaming supply chain issues? From past performance, some combination of all of the above. Spin. Deflect. Blame others. Same Labor; same Barr. Can’t be trusted.

My immediate reaction to this is that this is big news and a heck of a right hook by UPS to their chief competition. But, I also have the feeling that the more I think about this the more this could end up being Fool's Gold in a few ways. Is this really good business for UPS? Isn't the United States Postal Service still trying to reduce air cargo as much as possible? How will this impact UPS' existing performance for non-government customers? With a General Election not too far away, the potential Government parties must recognise that in passenger transport, the number one priority is to take early action to improve bus services, increase patronage, attract people from cars. Thus, at relatively low resource use and cost, we can make significant steps towards the massive switch from private car use needed to achieve statutory climate change targets including net-Zero. We do NOT need further debate on franchising and other governance issues. The preferred form of governance in each local area is for local strakeholders to determine and almost all are now provided for in legislation. Rapid performance and patronage improvements can if be achieved if Whitehall (not just DfT), operators and local authorities work together, with everyone focused on short term action bringing large steps towards longer term targets.

Close Protection - The Rite of Passage Within both the military and the Foreign Commonwealth (and Development) Office, I have worked with numerous extraordinary people and a very small number of entirely unimpressive ones. In the high-level corporate world, it was almost completely the opposite. The best thing about this was that the professional ones rose to the top and the others simply vanished. I worked with some excellent peers, too many of whom were entirely undervalued by management, companies and clients alike. However, throughout all roles as an operative, team leader and manager, I often witnessed ego’s competing with a desire to do good. People going along to get along. Compromising their integrity, values and overall best practice and professionalism that were instilled into them during their former uniformed service careers, just because their commercial one, hence personal financial security, compelled them to toe the party line. It was and is, akin to working within a fiefdom run on fear and advancement. For the most part you only have to look at the prevailing winds. Too much is concentrated in the hands of too few. It is peopled with compromised individuals, unfit for the positions they hold.  The issue with the private sector is such that it is a ‘gig economy’, predominantly short-term duration requirement promoting the fast buck commerce fulfilled on the back of an unvetted messaging app group or social media post. Uncommitted contract providers seeking to maximise profit with minimum effort. It is by design, a service that generally lacks gravitas and credibility. Industry newcomers see the 2-week course as an immediate rite of passage to ‘protect someone’s life’, whilst magnetised and focussed on the glamour, the huge numerous estates, the limos, the private aircraft, the topstar hotels and restaurants and of course, the photographs of themselves with their principals so they can grandstand on the ‘social’. To whomever at Air Canada needs to read this, your baggage self-check-in at Pearson isn’t quite finished. It’s a great start and could work, but you’re missing the last half of implementing a process like this. Have you considered how customers use this or similar systems in other industries, like groceries? Take the computers and employees you have behind the desks and put them all on tablets with portable scanners. Add status lights to each baggage check-in that blink yellow when a customer can't self-check. Then, these employees, normally behind the desks, can walk through the kiosks and assist customers who trigger the blinking light. Personal experience demonstrated that our family could have saved 45 minutes if this kiosk-side support was used. Who knows how many countless hours you could save customers during check-in and make staff more efficient. Kudos to the Air Canada staff who seemed to get this, approaching folks stuck in the “problems with the self-check-in” line and helping them as much as they could within the system's limitations.
