And my very own personal example of that happening, when I was responsible for local government transport content, and I put a few of the boring statistics about miles of road and number of traffic lights on the transport main page. The reason I put those statistics on the transport main page was because I happened to sit diagonally opposite the person who handled the telephone enquiries (this was pre-contact centre) for that transportation department, who September to June used to get a steady stream of phone calls asking for them — from school children doing their geography assignments. A handful of bullet points on the website later, and those calls dropped to near none. Rhetorically 90% of local government page views are for this sort of ‘boring content customers aren’t interested in’; get rid of it and those customers will phone up asking for it instead — or worse, raise FOI requests. That PSNI personal data breach? That was a result of an FOI request for information which arguably should have been on the website already as part of the organisation’s Publication Scheme. If it had have been already on the website it’s unlikely it would have been hastily put together to fulfill a request within a time limit with the catastrophic error included. Good #LocalGovDigital #ContentDesign should be about ensuring the boring niche content nobody is interested in doesn’t interfere with users’ ability to get to the high volume essential content — it should not be about causing reverse channel shift by entirely getting rid of the content which a small percentage, but when added together still a high absolute volume, of people are looking for.
