Tomorrow (May 21st) I will be giving a short input (in german) on Open Government and Open Data at the Civic Data Lab of Civic Coding – Innovationsnetz KI für das Gemeinwohl, a program provided to CSOs and welfare organisations by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth and Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection. There I will present at least two examples of Open Data Stewardship and Self empowerment for Data for Policy: As Google Maps does not calculate barrier-free routes, in 2016 I initiated and designed an app for the city of Heidelberg for route planning of barrier-free routes for people with disabilities in the old town and pitched funding for a prototype to the state. The idea was to develop a handy app based on the algorithms of openrouteservice.org from HeiGIT at the University of Heidelberg that a) fills in data gaps in Openstreetmaps with official geo-data, b) displays barrier-free routes as navigation, c) facilitates community-based collection of accessibility data points, d) enables validation of data points by the community and e) identifies gaps in (legally required) accessibility (kinda LegalTech or RegTech). In the long, the app should be made available under the European Union Public Licence (EUPL) for transfer to other cities and as a moral icebreaker for open geodata. This was followed by a long and arduous data stewardship by me in various departments. Not least because data on lowered curbs did not exist, I had to find additional internal financing for a vehicle to collect data those curb-data. At some point, that finally worked. And curiously enough, it had something to do with the lack of Google Streetview in Heidelberg at the time and a price tag in this...[Cliffhanger] (screenshot in comment) Clubs, e.g. sports clubs, can also be lobbyists: e.g. for public services and infrastructure. As organizations, they have more weight, and digital instruments can help them. For example, the German Lifesaving Association (DLRG) has observed a loss of swimming ability in the population. One factor for this could be a decline in municipal swimming pools or their lack of attractiveness. There is hardly any #OpenData on this at the municipal level to get an overview of the situation. That is why the DLRG has started an initiative with the Society for Swimming Facilities for community-based data collection...[Cliffhanger] Come over for some Open-Data-Psychedelics and find link in repost below Turn on, tune in, drop out! I am very much looking forward to my new part-time position as a senior researcher at the Université de Fribourg/Universität Freiburg. Together with Markus Gmür, Muriel Surdez, and Lucien Delley, I will be working on the project "The making of communities: Urban and digital spaces of common". ❤️-lich Willkommen am VMI Diana Betzler! Diana Betzler wird in den kommenden Jahren gemeinsam mit Markus Gmür, Muriel Surdez und Lucien Delley am Thema "Die Entwicklung von Gemeinschaften: Urbane und digitale Räume für den sozialen Zusammenhalt" arbeiten. Dieses Thema ist Teil eines inter- und transdisziplinären Forschungsprogramms der Université de Fribourg/Universität Freiburg mit dem Titel "Zukunft Schweiz", das von der Die Mobiliar finanziert wird. Mit industriellem und technologischem Wandel wie Urbanisierung und Digitalisierung transformiert sich das soziale Zusammensein der Menschen. Traditionelle Formen zwischenmenschlicher Bindung, wie die Dorfgemeinschaft, weichen neuen, vielfältigen Formen von Communities. Diese Formen des Zusammenseins können online oder physisch, dauerhaft oder temporär, formell oder informell sein. Beispiele hierfür sind Nachbarschaftsinitiativen, innovative Formen des Zusammenarbeitens und der Ko-Kreation, virtuelle Interessens- oder Freizeitgemeinschaften, sowie Gemeinschaften des Teilens und Schenkens. Um den sozialen Zusammenhalt in diesen komplexen Gefügen zu erhalten und zu stärken, initiieren staatliche und gesellschaftliche Akteure neue innovative Formate der Beteiligung und Zusammenarbeit von Bürger:innen, wie Hackathons, World Cafés, Design Thinking, digitalisierte Lösungsmodelle, und vieles mehr. Das Forschungsprogramm wird sich insbesondere auf diese neuen Formate der Beteiligung von Bürger:innen konzentrieren, die darauf abzielen, Menschen zu aktivieren und stärker in das Gemeinwesen einzubinden, um den sozialen Zusammenhalt zu fördern. Diana Betzler bringt eine Fülle an Erfahrung und Fachwissen mit und wird eine wertvolle Bereicherung für unser Forschungsteam sein. Wir freuen uns auf die Zusammenarbeit und auf den Austausch mit allen aus der VMI Community, die sich ebenfalls für das Thema interessieren!

🚀 Pentadoc goes Future! 🚀 Wir freuen uns, bekannt zu geben, dass Pentadoc zusammen mit dem Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz (DFKI) und PrimeForce Group Ltd. vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung den Zuschlag für das innovative Forschungsprojekt KiCoPro (KI-basierter Copilot für Prozessmodellierung) erhalten hat! 🤖 In den kommenden Jahren werden wir intensiv mitwirken, den sinnvollen Einsatz von Sprachmodellen im Bereich der Prozessmodellierung und Prozessoptimierung zu erforschen und weiterzuentwickeln. „Wir freuen uns sehr über den Zuschlag zum Forschungsprojekt, da wir neben unserem Beitrag zur wissenschaftlichen Arbeit auch spannende Impulse für unsere innovative Unternehmensberatung in diesem Bereich erwarten.“ Christoph Tylla (Partner). Last week, Süddeutsche Zeitung Dossier quoted me in their online digest. Here is my full comment about platform alternatives in Europe: “Online platforms, particularly Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple, and Microsoft – the so-called GAFAM platforms – have become a fundamental infrastructure that shapes various aspects of our social, political, and economic lives. However, there is an ongoing critical discussion about how these tech giants accumulate and distribute wealth and resources, transform existing institutions, and influence the formation of political opinion. Today, the focus of European society is on making online platforms more socially responsible and accountable to European society's values. There are several ways to achieve this. One of them is to regulate online platforms, as we see in the current EU regulations with DSA and DMA. Another way is to explore new design proposals for online platforms. This includes alternative business models, alternative approaches to platform management (e.g., cooperatives), alternative ideas about how online platforms should be operated, and much more. In the INCA_EU project, we are exploring these initiatives.”
