Chairman Xi speaks often about "high quality development." It is not clear exactly what this means. Only 60% of China's vehicle manufacturing capacity is used and there is already a glut. China is trying to export its way out of this, sending 12% of its annual 27 million units abroad, likely starting a trade war with the EU. Xiaomi contracted state-owned BAIC Group to make their cars and they will sell them to their mostly domestic customers (called "Mi Fans"), thus sopping up under-utilized existing state-owned capacity and putting a new domestic consumption spin on it. Maybe this is smart. Maybe this is "high quality development. --- China Peace Initiative was created to explain and educate, toward understanding, hoping for peace. www.cpi-heping.org

📱 Russian Affection for IPhones Despite Export Controls📱 According to various news outlets, despite export restrictions, the new iPhone 16 is still making its way into civilian markets in Russia through parallel imports and third-country intermediaries. Nonetheless, Apple paused all its product sales in Russia in March 2022 and halted services like Apple Pay. Under U.S. export regulations, items listed on the Commerce Control List (CCL), including Apple IPhones classified under ECCN 5A992.c, generally require a license for export, reexport, or transfer to Russia and Belarus. This development highlights the ongoing presence of grey market activity in Russia. #Compliance #ExportControl #Sanctions #ECCN #Russia #TradeCompliance #GlobalTrade #EAR

Latest on International Trade Magazine: Another wake-up call for the world Philip Hennessey, Xeneta Director of External Communications, discusses the danger of taking maritime supply chains for granted following the outbreak of conflict in the Red Sea Do we fully appreciate the fragility of the world we inhabit? As a society we take advantage of the wonders of the modern age to make our daily lives that little bit easier. The world is designed around our convenience, bending to our every whim. And we like it that way. With just the tap of our mobile phone we can order an almost infinite range of goods to be delivered straight to our door in a matter of days, if not hours. Geographical boundaries are no barrier in the pursuit of consumer satisfaction. Fruit from South America, electronics from Asia or sauvignon blanc from New Zealand? You name it, you got it. Of course, there is a far more serious game at play and the stakes are much higher than whether the latest iPhone is available in your favorite colour. South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission (FTC) has announced a preliminary decision to impose up to $4.1 billion in fines on SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus for allegedly coordinating their sales incentives to mobile phone retailers between 2015 and 2022. While the telcos argue they followed government guidance from the Mobile Device Distribution Improvement Act, the result has hit consumers. This alleged alignment kept competition low and prices high, meaning customers have been paying more for their devices and plans without benefiting from true market competition. If these fines are imposed, it could seriously shake up South Korea’s telecom landscape. What do you think—does this signal real change for consumers, or is it too little, too late? https://lnkd.in/evuWR53h #Telecom #FTC #ConsumerRights #SouthKorea #TelecomRegulation
