When you are working with vulnerable people in any setting, understanding real lives and trauma is crucial. Trauma, resilience and strength impact how adults and children participate with people and organisations. Understanding and being a trauma-informed practitioner is essential in working with vulnerable people. However, as a researcher, a trauma-informed approach to engaging children in research on childhood abuse remains difficult. Discussion about the rights of children, Article 12, and how to support children in a meaningful participatory involvement was enlightening.
On Monday, 24th July, I attended the conferences about Adopting a Trauma-Informed Approach to Research: Lessons from Practice and Lives Experience at the School of Law and Social Justice - the University of Liverpool, representing the University of Bedfordshire, post-graduate (IASR) research. The conference led by Professor Helen Beckett and Helen Stalford, where they presented their research on trauma-informed practice, provided insight into how best to approach research and practice in a trauma-informed manner.
Lots of informative approaches were shared, working with Migrant communities, their journey of displacement and trauma and how acknowledging the impact of trauma experience allows for better outcomes needs to be a priority.
There needs to be a more significant proactive accounting of the power dynamics; working collaboratively and empowering gives people more choices and control of their own experiences and avoids replicating abusive power dynamics.
The Principle of trauma-informed practice cuts across disciplines when you explore meaningful participation and what this means in research and practice. Indeed, the challenges are in connection and care, ensuring the research approach and ethics standards are met and adhered to as good practice and upholding the rights of participants.
