Great new initiative for S5 school students from Addleshaw Goddard. Please read on .... "Legal Explorers": This opportunity is available for S5 students to find out more about the legal sector and gain valuable work experience throughout the 2023/2024 academic year and is based in their Edinburgh office. As participants, students will receive: ➡ A laptop and data to access online sessions and support their own studies – they can keep the laptop after the programme finishes  ➡ A one-off bursary payment to cover the time spent on work experience ➡ Online workshops giving an insight into Addleshaw Goddard and working on key skills for a future career in law ➡ A mentor to provide advice and support throughout their time with us ➡ An in-person insight day in April, and a week of work experience in the summer ➡ Opportunities to network with Addleshaw Goddard colleagues and learn more about the variety of roles at AG As a social mobility programme, applicants need to meet certain criteria to be considered. A career in public service is not a backup plan for a career in BigLaw. It requires intentionality and sacrifice. It can also be particularly rewarding to know that you are doing justice every day. I never had any interest in On Campus Interviewing (OCI). I attended law school to pursue public interest law. Though my interests evolved throughout law school (from reproductive rights litigation to criminal prosecution), I never considered working at a law firm. I understood the path to a career in public service: ✅I spent both my summers, as well as two semesters, interning with four different components of the U.S. Department of Justice to get a breadth of criminal law experience. ✅I served as an associate editor for the Washington University Journal of Law and Policy. ✅I developed relationships with professors who served as professional references. ✅I networked and identified allies, mentors, and sponsors who could put in a good word when I applied for jobs. ✅ I decided to clerk in DC Superior Court, the jurisdiction where I intended to practice law. I was in a privileged position to know what “all the things” were to plan for career success, as well as to be able to execute them. All of my internships during law school were unpaid. I received summer public interest stipends that did not cover the full cost of summer expenses. I recognize the value of law firms. Firms provide excellent experience in client services, and they have the resources to invest in training new attorneys. But if you don’t want to work at a law firm, pursue your passion! Whether you want to be a prosecutor like I did (inspired by one of my legal heroes, fellow Washington University in St. Louis School of Law alumnus and former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe), a public defender, a legal aid attorney, or a public interest litigator at a nonprofit, the legal community needs more of you! While your deadlines will be different from your peers (you won’t have a post-graduate job lined up heading into 2L year), your salary will be lower, and perhaps you’ll be perceived as going against the grain, your work will be particularly rewarding. There are many things you can do with a law degree. I wish law schools invested more in their public interest students - not just financially, but in terms of mentorship, programming, and training. Volume 32, Number 2 of the Journal of Affordable Housing & Community Development Law is the Back-to-School issue! We received excellent submissions for our 2022–2023 student writing competition and decided to publish not only the winner but also four of the runners-up. The winning article, by recent Georgetown University Law Center graduate Reuben Siegman, seeks to understand tensions between environmentalism and housing affordability using two case studies: Minnesota and California. In this issue, you will also find student-authored articles that: - Interrogate community input in real estate development plans in Los Angeles. - Examine NIMBYism in Washington, D.C. - Assess housing codes, building codes, and their relationship to housing affordability. - Delve into the right to counsel in eviction cases. The deadline for our next writing competition is approaching this fall. Please encourage your interns, summer associates, and students to submit their work. Our selection panel loves reading their work, and I am delighted to have the opportunity to publish it. Alongside the student articles, this issue brings you our Digest of Recent Literature and a review of "Hyperlocal: Place Governance in a Fragmented World," published by The Brookings Institution in late 2022. Happy Monday! We have another amazing intern to introduce you to. Please join us in welcoming Eric Xie to the team at SLC! Southern Legal Counsel's advocacy for the decriminalization of poverty was the primary resonation with for Eric. He "Find(s) it abhorrent that local governments would rather obscure the public face of homelessness and persecute the unhoused rather than effectuating tangible change." He also hopes to expand his exposure of law as a discipline, and had never encountered public interest legal work until learning about SLC. He thought that interning here was a natural choice to learn about the virtues of pro bono, community-oriented legal advocacy. FAVORITE PART OF INTERNING WITH SLC: By contributing to SLC's efforts to decriminalize poverty, I want to comprehend the argumentative techniques used to undermine the integrity of these unjust laws. Reading through the court opinions pertaining to this effort has taught me about the constitutional grounds that such laws are in conflict with. FUN FACT: I was born in West Palm Beach and raised in Tampa. I currently studying economics and political science. My favorite food is dumplings. FUTURE GOALS: Attempting to merge the virtues of sustainability with legal advocacy would be a fulfilling path to take. My general interest in political philosophy suggests that a concentration in constitutional law may be an apt fit as well. I had the honor of serving on a career panel today for my alma mater, Vermont Law and Graduate School. I have helped many law students over the years, and my take-home advice is always this: #lawschool is not trade school! Trade schools do a great job of placing students into their professions. If you train to be a carpenter or electrician, you are practically guaranteed a job after school (a reason, among many, why the trades are undervalued in our country). If you want a career in law after law school, you need to work for it. Students who take on internships, network, and hit the pavement have successful legal careers . . . 100% of the time. Those who do not do this heavy lifting often get stuck in unfulfilling careers. I've seen far too many law school graduates in such unfortunate positions. Law schools (especially mine) have not done enough to bridge the gap between a legal education and a legal career. This is why it is SO important for #lawyers to help the next generation break into our profession. #lawstudents #payitforward

These (great) opportunities require applicants to list three references... Remember, the best references all have one thing in common: They're not generic or vague. If you're an applicant, make sure your references have all of the information they need to describe not just your basic character traits, but real examples of when you demonstrated your qualifications for these particular roles.
