This post can save people in the job market hundreds of hours of time. I compiled a list of platforms you should stop applying through immediately (they are wasting your time in an already time-consuming job market!). I speculate that some jobs are being posted on these sites as a way of generating income OR simply get you looked over as an applicant due to the application pool. DON'T: 🕯️jobbank.gc.ca (Canadian Job Bank) - A large portion of companies advertise using fake email addresses on here, your resume will likely end up in the email box and never be viewed. The job postings are generic and won't give you vital information about what you're applying to either. 🕯️indeed.com (Indeed) - Always apply on the Company website directly (Indeed gives you the option to do so), anyone can spam apply on Indeed and they get 1000s of applicants through there. 🕯️Responding to spam recruiter emails. Certain companies send spam job postings (Example: Tanisha Systems Inc are resume harvesters and responding to them is once again wasting your time. Don't fall for the cheap antics!). It's all about getting you to sign a 'right to represent' so the recruiter can hit a quota. I personally look up recruiters that email me using Reddit or doing a simple Google search before bothering to respond. DO: 🕯️Network: Often, the best job opportunities are found through personal connections. Attend industry meetups, engage in professional online forums, and reach out to contacts in your field. 🕯️Apply directly on the Company Website 🕯️Apply on LinkedIn 🕯️Apply on GlassDoor 🕯️Apply in Person Good luck on your job search! 🌞

ALERTS Want to save some time in your job searching? MANAGE your job ALERTS or make changes, go to the "Jobs" tab and click on "Saved job searches" to view and edit your alerts. LinkedIn will send you email notifications with job postings that match your saved search criteria based on the frequency you selected. Stay updated on relevant job opportunities without having to actively search for them. Remember to adjust and update filters when necessary.

𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸: Utilize the "Connections in Common" feature to gain insights and connections within your target companies. 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: Update your profile regularly and opt to share your resume with all recruiters. This marks you as an "active talent," making you more visible. 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: If you have LinkedIn Premium, flag a job as your "Top Choice." This shows employers your genuine interest in their role. 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀: Use the "Under 10 applicants" filter to discover less competitive yet highly valuable job openings. 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗹𝘆: Install the Apollo.io extension for Google Chrome. It helps you search for relevant contacts at your target companies. Even the free version offers valuable insights and connections. Implement these strategies to navigate the LinkedIn job market more effectively. I get messaged daily by people looking to get a foot in at Ascendion for UX work. I can't pull those strings, yall! I appreciate the hustle though. I recommend reaching out to the account posting the job, and/or someone in our Talent Acquisition team (they're all amazing people!). The best I can do is offer that advice, and tell you, "Good luck! I hope to see you at the next UX circle meeting!" For everyone else looking for work in this world, try this out below. LinkedIn is just a box with rules like everything else. Game the system. It's not cheating, it's strategy. The robots are your friends. Learn how they help you, and then let them do that. Gamers know what I'm talking about.

I received a message yesterday from a job seeker who said, "I've updated my resume and LinkedIn profile; I'm connected to tons of recruiters; what should I do now?" Here are some next steps you can take in your job search: 1. Start engaging by commenting and liking your contact's updates on LinkedIn. 2. Make a target company list. Research each company on LinkedIn, follow their page, and engage with their updates and sponsored posts. This increases your visibility and spotlights your profile when company recruiters view it. 3. See who you're connected to at your target companies and start having conversations. 4. See who you can connect to at your target companies (look for 2nd-degree connections). 5. Run a "people" search on LinkedIn for hiring managers and decision-makers in your industry and at your target companies. Connect and engage consistently. 6. Write content. Share your expertise in status updates. 7. Apply to jobs posted on LinkedIn and look to see if the hiring manager's profile is attached to the post. If it is, reach out and message them.
