USAID joined anti-corruption champions from around the world at the International Anti-Corruption Conference in Lithuania to discuss countering corruption in key sectors like energy and global health; supporting the defenders of democracy; and forging new partnerships with the private sector and other donors. Hi, I'm Shannon Green, US AIDS Assistant to the Administrator for Democracy, Human Rights and Governance. I'm in Vilnius, Lithuania for the International Anti Corruption Conference, where hundreds of anti corruption champions from around the world are getting together to share knowledge and see how we can work together to make more progress in the fight against corruption. Throughout the week, US AID has been sharing the many ways that we are working to counter corruption, namely by collaborating with the private sector. Empowering the brave civil society activists and journalists who are working to expose corruption in their countries and throughout their regions in which they work, and finally building country resilience to the threat of corruption. Protecting Human Rights in SADC Region The Southern African Development Community Parliamentary Forum (SADC-PF) has developed guidelines for Parliaments, like those for fighting corruption and promoting human rights in the SADC region. These guidelines will help parliaments and anti-corruption and human rights actors combat corruption and enhance human rights accountability. This is an impressive collaboration between SADC PF, the Austrian Development Agency (ADA), and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in advancing democracy and good governance in SADC region. SADC-PF consulted extensively with stakeholders, ensuring these principles are well-informed and reflect the region's needs. All 16 SADC Member States have adopted the Principles and Guidelines for Parliaments to Promote and Protect Human Rights, showcasing their collective commitment to human rights. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) supports efforts to realise human rights and promotes the activities of non-state actors like political foundations, civil society actors and church organisations in the field of human rights. During the round table on RTCG - Radio Televizija Crne Gore, I underlined the importance of tackling corrupt practices in public administration. This effort should be one of the main priorities of the newly elected government toward democratization processes and acceleration of EU integration. In particular, depoliticization, rationalization, and professionalization of public services are crucial to improve governance of the public sector leading to professional and service-oriented institutions resilient to corruption and organized crime. International cooperation is of particular importance, especially with the European Commission, Europol #Europol, the Council of Europe #Moneyval, and the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) #FATF, as Montenegro lacks primarily technical capabilities and adequate human resources to address a number of systematic challenges.
