We’re honoring the legacy of our former CEO, Major General Joe Robles Jr., who passed away yesterday. Joe was a Soldier at his core, and his service included multiple deployments and several distinguished honors. General Robles knew what it meant to serve, and he did so every day of his life. He led with integrity and commitment – to our teammates, our members and our great country. Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time.

Remembering when USAA changed the dress code allowing employees to wear shorts. Nobody would wear them, fearing reprisals I’m guessing? General Robles took matters into his own hands, styling shorts and a Tommy Bahama shirt to the office. Sending a clear message to everyone, times were a changing at USAA. His leadership was always the difference. RIP General Robles.

I have to share that, to this day, I have not met such a humble and yet strong, engaging leader since working at #USAA. I recall #JorRobles visits to the #Phoenix, AZ office and our interaction when I traveled to the #SanAntonio office. Here are some of my observations of #JoeRobles. - He sat side-by-side and listened to conversation with members, not just one call... but several. - When he saw trash on the ground, he picked it up. - When speaking with you, he looked you in the eyes and gave you his full attention and he remembered things about you from previous conversations. - He would ask for feedback. I recall him asking about my NLP studies and my critique of his speech for Town Halls. He was curious and asked for my ideas. - He smiled and laughed at the awe people had of him and asked you to just treat him like anyone else. - He never focused on what was wrong, but what was right about your efforts. - He always put members/employees/humans first. I will always remember his spirit and heart for people.

A great leader and patriot - authentic, caring, and one of the finest men I ever knew and was blessed and privileged to work for. To learn more about Joe’s storied career, check out this bio from a few years ago when he received the prestigious Horatio Alger Award for his dedication, purpose, and perseverance, both personally and professionally. https://horatioalger.org/members/detail/josue-robles-jr/ As Emerson wrote - “The purpose of life . . . is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” Thank you Joe, for a remarkable life well-lived, the example you set as a leader, and the huge difference you made in so many lives.

One of the absolute best leaders and people I have ever known. It was an honor to work for him during my years at USAA. He always talked about “the shadow of the leader.” His was huge and inspirational, inspiring trust and commitment to USAA’s mission and vision. Thank you, General, rest in well-earned peace, and trust your many friends will rally around your family.

General Robles was the best CEO I had the opportunity to support and serve. I will never forget him consistently sharing to always take care of your people first and the financial results will follow. He was a genuine, and kind leader that was brought on at precisely the right time to lead USAA. Wishing his family and dear friends peace to face the days ahead and loving memories to forever hold in your hearts. Rest in peace, sir.

While I did not have the honor of meeting General Robles, I can just imagine the outstanding service that he gave not only to our country, but to those at USAA as a humble, inspiring, caring, supportive leader who set the bar high for all through his fine example. Rest in peace, Sir. My deepest condolences to his family and friends during this time of sorrow and mourning. 🙏🇺🇸🕊️

Had the opportunity to work on a project for General Robles in 1998 when he was CFO - he was an impressive leader. RIP General.
