The U.S. Secret Service is not really secret. It is an official service among other different governmental services whose work is monitored for security, defense, and justice. It is called secret because it works on everything secret, like crimes which are done secretly and criminals remain invisible. They are experts who unveil criminal secrecy and reach the criminals through secret investigation those invisible criminals would never know who's after them, untill the end of their investigative mission. At that time, there was no official national currency & counterfeit was largely rampant. So to fight counterfeit crime, the identities of the original 7 Service agents were kept Secret, which allowed them to conduct their investigations & enforcement duties as appropriate.
