For years now, I have been massively influenced by former US Navy Seal Jocko Wilink. His leadership principles from combat and how they can be applied to my work and personal life have been life changing for me. One thing that has stood out to me is the concept of leading up the chain of the command. So how can you lead up the chain of the command? Here are 3 things I have learned: 1) Build trust with your superior and leave differences behind you. 2) Proactively anticipate your superiors requirements from you, in order to avoid shortcomings. 3) When being proactive, leave your ego on the table --> its not about you being the shiny star that outperforms, but about putting your superior in a winning position. Arguments x Leadership Over the weekend, I had the distinct honor of swearing in Gaither Keener as the Department of North Carolina’s Judge Advocate. I think it’s important I share, here, what I shared to our membership. Since my first meeting in The American Legion, Gaither has been my mentor. For the first four years, I think that was a relatively easy role. Over the past 12 months, though, I don’t doubt I have been a significant thorn in his side. I have used my platform to share my mind and fight for the change I believe our members deserve. And while I think it’s been largely appreciated, my Department (State) has received substantial backlash as a result of my comments. It would have been easy to excommunicate me from the Department. When National requested I resign my appointments, it would’ve been simple to pull my appointments at the State level, as well. Heck, I think most of the powers-that-be requested that. But Gaither didn’t take the easy route. He kept me in my positions at the state level. When I announced my candidacy for District Commander, he supported me. And when it came time to swear him in, he asked me to do it. We don’t always see eye to eye. We’ve brawled on different issues. And sometimes we have to agree to disagree. But with all that said, we respect one another, because we both realize we care for the Legionnaires, above all the politics. That’s a leader. When the legendary Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, a paragon of military brilliance, shares his insights, it is as if the spirit of leadership itself has chosen to articulate its essence through the eloquent voice of one who has weathered the storms of command. In the backdrop of the release of his cinematic portrayal in "Sam Bahadur," (which I am yet to watch) this interview resurfaced in my Newsfeed, offering a rare glimpse into the mind of a leader who navigated the tumultuous terrain of the armed forces during the 4 wars including World War II. My own family has two generations of Army officers between these 4 wars between my grandfather and my father. My grandfather was a doctor in the British Army mentioned-in-dispatches owing to his bravery and service during the Kohima Mission. We grew up listening to stories of Sam Manekshaw’s bravery and integrity, didn’t really understand the significance until I was much older. "There is no such thing as a wrong decision. What matters is once a decision is taken, make it right," encapsulates the essence of leadership – decisiveness coupled with a commitment to transform decisions into triumphs. Listening to Manekshaw's words cut through the complexities of leadership, providing lessons that resonate not only in the barracks but reverberate in the boardrooms where leaders grapple with seemingly insurmountable challenges. In the realm of large teams facing adversity, the Army stands as an epitome of resilience and discipline. Manekshaw’s words are a beacon for everyone at the helm of vast teams, confronting challenges that appear formidable. As the interview unfolded, Manekshaw's reflections encapsulate a lifetime of leadership, reflecting on the importance of camaraderie, resilience, and the indomitable spirit that propels teams to transcend their limits. "A soldier's first battlefield is his own mind," revealing the profound truth that leadership begins with conquering one's internal battles.
