Royal Navy Seeks Long-Range Anti-Submarine Weapon The Royal Navy is looking for a new missile system that can launch torpedoes from its Type 26 frigates. This Long Range Anti-Submarine Warfare weapon (LRAW) aims to counter the increasing range of modern submarine-launched torpedoes, exceeding 50km. While the U.S. Navy's Vertical Launch Anti-Submarine Rocket (VLA) is compatible with the Type 26's Mk41 launch system, its current range of approximately 10km falls short. This means that either the VLA needs significant range improvements, or the Royal Navy must explore alternative solutions, like the Japanese Type 7, to achieve the desired standoff distance. The goal is to out-range enemy submarines, giving the Royal Navy a critical advantage in any future conflict. #RoyalNavy #ASW #SubmarineWarfare #DefenseTechnology #VLA #Type26Frigate #Mk41VLS #DefenseIndustry #MaritimeSecurity #NationalSecurity

Previously the arrival in Mediterranean sea of the UFA Kilo class submarine escorted by the ocean-going tug Sergey Bulk, on 15 December the fleet oiler Kama also transited Strait of Gibraltar eastbound. The arrival of the Kama in the Mediterranean could hypothesize: - replace the oiler Yelnya present in the Mediterranean since August 2023 - strengthening the logistical support of the Russian Mediterranean task force to allow some Russian ships to transit the Suez Canal towards Red Sea.

Admiral Daryl Caudle - “The Global Maritime Response Plan … looks at our Navy and says, ‘What can we do if I need to transition to a warfighting footing more quickly? What is it I can deliver to the forward commanders in a more real-time sense? What do I need to do in the continental United States to support that effort?’…” The new plan is based on the premise that out of 300 ships that are part of the Navy’s fleet, 100 are usually deployed worldwide, and another 100 ships are not available for immediate deployment due to maintenance. The strategy will establish protocols to allow the service to mobilize its remaining 100 ships quickly in case of a conflict. “That’s the 100 I want to be able to mobilize in the most effective way I can,” Caudle said. The Global Maritime Response Plan will provide a comprehensive strategy for quickly mobilizing available forces should a conflict ensue.

Here's another really interesting perspective on the Independent Analysis into Navy's Surface Combatant Fleet. In this Defence Connect article Steve Kuper takes a look at the surface combatant fleet in the context of the wider Royal Australian Navy. There are some obvious gaps, notably afloat support, and maritime enablers (MCM and hydro) as well as question marks around amphibious and littoral capabilities; noting the emphasis placed on this for the Australian Army by DSR. #ausnavy

I have read the proposed changes being to the Australian Navy with interest. With their proposals and recent developments with the Royal Navy in the UK - I wonder if the following has been realised. Frigates and Destroyers have historically been small, fairly lightly armed vessels, certainly up to the 1950s. Since then they have grown in size and armament and in my opinion really have become the modern ‘Battleship’ or ‘Heavy Cruiser’ - if we use old terminology. With numbers of T45 being low and the T26 also only being 8 vessels and Hunter class being reduced in number - I think this may finally be realised by Governments and Navies too. There needs to be more smaller, adaptable and cost effective vessels for roles which do not need a ‘battleship’ - I certainly see there being room for more River class OPV or bigger corvette type vessels.
