We are excited to share the powerful thoughts from SMA Mike Weimer, the 17th Sergeant Major of the Army, as captured on this week’s special episode of the Your Next Mission® video podcast! This week on #DidYouKnow, we wanted to unpack one of the points of emphasis from him . . . “Brilliance at the Basics”. SMA Weimer's focus, as articulated, revolves around the concept of each Soldier mastering the basics of their craft. 💡He challenges Soldiers to be Introspective and identify the fundamental basics that are non-negotiable, the pillars of excellence that each one of us must bring to the table when serving under any commander. 👉 He prompts Soldier to ask themselves, what are the fundamental basics that are no-fail for you? These are the essential skills, values, and competencies that form the bedrock of our military prowess. SMA Weimer emphasizes the importance of being truly exceptional at these core elements, as they are the building blocks for success in any mission or assignment. 👉 This approach reflects a commitment to mastery and a deep understanding that excellence in the basics is the key to success in complex and dynamic environments. By cultivating a mindset of "Brilliance at the Basics," SMA Weimer is setting the stage for a force that is not only proficient in advanced technologies and strategies but also unwaveringly grounded in the timeless principles that define military strength. But wait…there’s more. 👉 SMA dives into the formula leaders need to look at when caring for Soldiers, “Do I actually care?” 💡Intrinsic vs Extrinsic motivation and the relation to the Oath of Enlistment . . . This is actually really true in alot of the DA. Most challeneges revolve around updating policies, you know, the hard work to create the maneuver space to try and fail. It's also getting average folks educated on those policies to leverage them properly or call attention to antiquated restrictions that do not capture the current threat/innovation environment.

🎯 I'm no good at math either, but this was spot on. Cheers for the insight SMA Mike Weimer and Jack Tilley This especially resonated working in the Defence innovation space both leading teams in and out of uniform. Teaching and training innovation practice and process doesn't come out of the box, you need to care if you're going to drive the best outcomes from and for your people. Standard ways of thinking and current military appreciation processes don't cut it when you're building leaders operating at the edge of current tactics and emerging tech. This calls for leaders to spend time exploring new ideas, new frameworks, new approaches and facilitating the same learning opportunity for those in their team. We've spent years building the methodologies, frameworks, models and culture needed for soldiers, decision-makers and leaders to successfully solve complex problems at speed with precision. We couldn't have done that if we didn't care. How does this resonate with you and your team?

All these relations to military and service in the army in US based companies never felt very inclusive to me; Born and raised in the middle of Europe, where war and military always have a bad taste (esp. in the current times again). Do you feel the same? I wanted to get a better understanding about that topic and stumbled over a podcast episode from Simon Sinek (of course, who else): https://lnkd.in/dVqxydGB Two takeaways for me: a) I wasn’t inclusive, because I didn’t try to understand the obsession (no offense!) relating to military/army/etc. so often. What an epiphanic moment for myself. b) The trust and feeling of family in the army must be amazing; There is a reason they use brothers and sisters when talking about their colleagues. Many of these people would give their lifes for saving a brother/sister - have you ever had that feeling in business? Let me know you thoughts!

Retired naval cryptologist and inveterate China specialist enjoying an encore career teaching China-focused courses (with a cultural anthropological emphasis) at UVA
A bit of blatant self-promotion. I was recently interviewed for the US Army’s “Hindsight” podcast to comment on how the PRC’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) applies Sunzi’s (Sun Tzu) Art of War to modern warfare. Observations were based on my translations & analyses of books on the topic published by the PLA and writings of PLA affiliated authors. The episode is entitled "Tipping the Scales, Sunzi & the PLA". If you’re not familiar with the history of The Art of War and its role in strategic thought, I’d strongly encourage you to first listen to the previous “Hindsight” interview with renowned Chinese military historian Peter Lorge (Vanderbilt University) for context. The episode is entitled "Not Your Grandma's Sun Tzu." Both podcasts, and other insightful episodes on a range of topics related to the PLA, can be accessed here: https://lnkd.in/eFpmeJEX
