Thank you so much for organizing and summarizing this event Jianjun Qin. It was very enrichning to be part of it, and to meet your colleagues and students from Shanghai Jiao Tong university. In my presentation I outlined how we may directly relate engineering decisions on design and maintenance of infrastructure systems to demands on the Earth system capacities - utilizing methods of probabilistic systems modeling, Bayesian decision analysis, LCA analysis and the concept of the Planetary Boundaries. After my presentation Professor Zhen Gao asked me if - with the framework I had presented - we are now in a position to navigate and direct societal developments such as to ensure sustainability. Yes - we indeed can, as we now have a consistent "book-keeping" system. However, in order to take benefit from this we also need demand "budgets" to navigate after (e.g. for CO2 emissions). At global scale we have the budgets from the Planetary Boundaries. However, when it comes to the allocation of the global budget to individual nation states we are at loss. Surely such a budget allocation is a difficult task - but it is necessary, and untill we have agreed on and allocated the budgets we are not able to manage global sustainability.

Today, September 11th, 2023 marks the 22-year anniversary of the tragic collapse of the World Trade Center’s twin towers. Dr. Douglas Schmucker, both an esteemed professor and professional in the field of structural engineering, presented a review of the critical collapse sequence in the second-year course CvEEN 2140: Strength of Materials. Drawing upon the principles of structural mechanics and utilizing the FEMA’s Building Performance Summary, Dr. Schmucker combined his more than 30 years of investigative engineering and teaching to aid students in understanding the “domino” effects that led to the collapses.

If you apply enough stress, most material will eventually break. But Purdue University engineers have designed new materials able to mitigate those stresses. Pablo Zavattieri, the Jerry M. and Lynda T. Engelhardt Professor in Civil Engineering at the Lyles School of Civil Engineering at Purdue, leads the research team working on this new class of intelligent architected materials. These materials have the potential to be used for transportation, military, and other real-world applications. PREDICTING THE REMAINING LIFE OF HSS   Using inspection/sensor data, multi-physics models and statistics, Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) permits accurate condition assessments of a structure or system's current and future ability to perform its intended functions. In this way, observable condition data can be transformed into actionable decision-support information for Operations and Engineering leadership.   One significant failure mechanism for hydraulic steel structures (HSS) is the formation and propagation of fatigue cracks.   Cracks that form may be stable, self-limiting, or unstable and pose a significant risk to structural performance.   This project aims to develop a methodology for HSS lifecycle analysis considering metals fatigue. Civil Works R&D is developing tools to predict locations of crack initiations given historical and expected future loadings, define crack initiation as a failure, and assess structural reliability given predicted initiation of cracking. Researchers fromDrexel University College of Engineering are looking to nature for solutions to one of the Department of Defense’s (DoD) ongoing challenges: fortifying aging concrete structures. Like much of the nation’s infrastructure, the DoD’s airfields, piers and silos are many decades old and not easily replaced. In hopes of restoring these structures for long-term use and developing a way to quickly repair them, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has launched a program, called Bio-inspired Restoration of Aged Concrete Edifices (BRACE), to develop self-healing concrete inspired by the vasculature found in plants and the human body. Oh the development of centrifuge testing, Sebastian Lobo-Guerrero! Interesting story to recount, but somewhere else in the history and in a conf. [1] :-) you should see comments of Professor Schofield of Cambridge University on the first paper by Pokrovsky and Fedorov [2], I guess the very first paper on the topic in the first international Conf. on soil mechanics and foundation engineering in Harvard, where Terzaghi looked with much doubt and concern at such (centrifuge) tests! I do not know he might have changed his mind later! In that conference, Terzaghi (1936) placed importance on observations by engineers during construction, of the Panama Canal, or in the construction camps of the US Bureau of Reclamation. The ISSMFE also included a centrifuge paper by Pokrovsky (1936) in the same conference. Terzaghi strongly criticised all papers on small scale physical modelling as "papers whose authors do not hesitate to generalise the conclusions derived from pure theory or from small scale tests on materials with very little if any resemblance to real soils".
