US Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District’s Post

The District lead an Engineering Outreach activity this week to approximately 350 6th Graders at Beadle Middle School in Omaha. Kellie Bergman, Chief of the Hydrologic Engineering Branch, introduced the students to the USACE and what type of projects and challenges our engineers tackle to support flood control, coastal engineering, our nation’s military both in the US and internationally, and improving our infrastructure. Lindsay Jaszkowiak, Chief of the Defense Fuels Resident Office, lead the hands-on activity to create paper columns to suspend a brick. The activity exposed the students to structural engineering concepts of column shapes, strength of materials, having multiple supports. Once the groups achieved supporting a single brick they were challenged to hold more. Some of the student groups innovative designs were able to hold multiple bricks! Kristle Beaudet, Geotechnical Engineer and Project Manager, discussed the importance of having a good understanding of the soil for building foundations for structures. Thank you to those involved as we continue to invest in outreach programs in our community to help promote the next generation of #engineers. #STEM #Engineering #USACEOmaha
