Why am I sharing this pic of Mike Siebold and I outside a dispensary in Kansas City? Jobs! In 2024 revenue jobs (retail / sales / marketing) are going to be the job creation powerhouse. This means access to legal, tested weed to the people! There are many new retail doors opening in New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Ohio, Florida and elsewhere. We have already seen an uptick in demand for retail leadership. Jobs in cannabis retail provide fast track career advancement : 😎 a budtender can become a supervisor / AGM in 12 months and a GM in 12 - 24 months. 😎 a budtender can learn a ton about working in cannabis, the cannabis consumer, and interact with lots of folks working in the industry 😎 a budtender is the face of the cannabis career to most people!!! Outside of jobs in cannabis retail, companies are launching wholesale strategies from scratch or within new markets so demand for sales leaders is picking back up. Marketing jobs are also returning. Not a ton of CMO jobs but execution focused salaried and management level marketing roles supporting wholesale / retail. Observation - For most dispensaries, retail customers do not just show up you need to have an understanding of your customer, the correct merchandising strategy, an inviting customer experience, and a marketing and outreach plan to get them in your shop and keep them coming in. Anyway revenue jobs are the pound for pound biggest job creator in 2024!

Have you worked retail? I have and it's a tough gig. Between long hours on your feet, dealing with fussy customers and pasting a smile on your face through it all, it's downright exhausting. Now, 10X all of that for budtenders working in a dispensary. The product knowledge required, the regulations to follow, navigating multiple computer platforms, cameras watching your every move, inexperienced managers. It's surprising anyone wants that job. These are the things that are always in the forefront of my mind when trying to implement new promotions, systems, programs, etc at retail. It takes more than knowledge about marketing, design, advertising or communications to be successful at retail marketing. When marketers have firsthand dispensary experience we have empathy for the staff. We know what support will be necessary to be successful. And we know many of the potential pitfalls to avoid.
