🚨 Release alert 🚨 As urban areas account today for around 75% of global energy consumption, 70% of global greenhouse gas emissions and are expected to grow, the decarbonisation of cities is a global priority. 1️⃣ Cities as catalysts for change: >60% of public #investment occurs at subnational level, underlying the need for cities to leverage public #procurement to create economies of scale and reduce cost of #cleanenergy technologies. 2️⃣  Cities fostering innovative and cost-effective #peoplecentred solutions: #community energy projects can promote environmental #sustainability while stimulating local economies, reduce energy bills and foster public trust in clean #energytransitions. 3️⃣ Modernising & expanding #powergrids for sustainable urban energy futures: as cities & their #electricity consumption expand, #efficient & #smart grid management becomes paramount in addressing urban energy challenges, making investment in grid modernisation & #digitalisation crucial. 4️⃣ The power of smart energy management & data-driven integrated #planning: digital systems can be particularly powerful in cities, where high-density environments allow to optimise demand-side energy assets at building, neighbourhood and community levels, while improved access to #data can help align city & power system planning. As urban areas continue to be a major contributor to global #energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, the need for #decarbonisation has never been clearer. With their dense populations and central role in commerce and innovation, cities are poised to lead the way to a sustainable future.  It's clear from the International Energy Agency (IEA)'s latest report, Empowering Urban Energy Transitions, that cities have immense potential to deliver rapid decarbonisation and energy efficiency gains. ☘ DECARBONIZATION: What's its Place in Vienna's Life? Decarbonization includes measures to reduce the greenhouse gas emission. Decarbonization of Vienna involves bringing CO2 emissions to naught by 2040. 🧐 The key question is how to achieve this? To draw up an action plan, in 2021, Wien Energie and Compass Lexecon conducted a research which was updated at the end of 2023. Based on the findings, the following conclusion follows – Vienna needs significant investments for the following: 1️⃣ Thermal refurbishment, heating system modernization Currently, this step is being actively implemented. The Regulation has come into effect since March (2024) which provides for the reconstruction of residential houses. And apartment owners can get a bonus of 1,000 up to 1,500€ as an incentive for their apartment decarbonization. 2️⃣ Expanding the central heating and financing decarbonized process technology. Concerning this point, the Decarbonization Regulation allows for transient solutions – to modernize an existing building, however, tapping it into the central heating later, as soon as it is possible. 3️⃣ Use of green gases in central heating and electrical power generation. 4️⃣ Establishment of charging points for electric vehicles, especially in a private sector. 5️⃣ Growth in the renewable energy generation in Vienna and and the rest of Austria. It is anticipated that the Re-planning and Decarbonization Regulation will have a great influence on the rates of implementing clean energy. These are important steps towards energy independence. The APEC - Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Urban Energy Report 2023 – Driving Cities Through the Low Carbon Transition has just been published. The report is the result of several months of work by a working group that proposed key policy recommendations for the energy transition in cities. It explains the key financial instruments required to achieve carbon neutrality and defines indicators for measuring step-by-step progress. The report also describes global carbon reporting frameworks and illustrates practical aspects for cities through case studies. It was a pleasure for me to be part of this working group. I contributed Section 2.1.2: The Role of Credit Guarantee Schemes in Renewable Energy Development: A Theoretical and Policy Analysis to this report.
