5th Year Law Student || Criminal Law|| Ex Intern Niti Nyaya Law Offices || Ex Intern at Kumar and Kumar Associates
Adv. Gagan Gandhi Sir, a respected lawyer from Niti Nyaya Law Offices, organized a legal aid camp with a noble aim to offer free legal help to communities that often struggle to access justice due to financial constraints. This initiative wasn't just about offering solutions to legal problems it was about empowering people with knowledge of their rights and how to navigate legal challenges effectively. During the camp, alongside Gagan Gandhi, interns from different legal backgrounds who eagerly volunteered their time. we, mentored by seasoned lawyers, played a crucial role in assisting the attendees. We listened to people's concerns, provided clear explanations of legal matters, and offered practical advice. The camp was a platform where individuals could bring various legal issues, from disputes over property to questions about consumer rights and family matters. Each case was treated with care and attention, aiming not just to resolve immediate issues but also to educate and empower those seeking help. For many participants, the impact was profound. They expressed gratitude for the clarity and support they received, often mentioning how daunting legal processes had seemed before they attended the camp. Some shared stories of finally finding solutions to long-standing issues, while others gained the confidence to pursue their legal rights. We also benefited immensely from the experience. It wasn't just about gaining practical legal knowledge but also about understanding the importance of giving back to the community and using their skills to make a meaningful difference in people's lives. Legal education is the bridge that connects the rule of law with society. In light of upholding the rule of law, legal education requires a multidisciplinary approach to acknowledge and address intricate issues in our country. Enhancing legal pedagogy, the Alliance School of Law at Alliance University encourages students to explore internship opportunities in various domains to inculcate constitutional values and a strong sense of societal welfare in them. INTERN TIP OF THE DAY #36: Maxime Demathieu is now a 3rd year law student at Deakin University. He interned with me and Michael Dickson in October. As part of his internship, Maxime wrote about law students in their 1st, 2nd and 3rd years undertaking legal internships like those I offer. He explained: "It is a common belief amongst law students that their ‘professional opportunities’ come around in their 4th and 5th years of university, as law subjects start to contain a ‘practical’ element to the completion of the unit. While this concept is great - providing law students with experience in the industry prior to their graduation - universities are often reluctant to offer these opportunities to students prior to their 4th year of their law degree. This creates the belief amongst pre 4th year law students that practical experience is not available to them." Having been a lawyer for 30 years, I am strongly of the view that the earlier law students get to see how an experienced lawyer works and interacts with clients and colleagues, the better. This is why I offer all levels of law students internships and invite them to take part in the activities provided by The Macmillan School of Practising Lawyers, such as the fantastic Lawyer Lunchtimes Seminar yesterday in which Joel Cranshaw and Andrew Neilson shared generously about their careers and offered great advice about searching out employment opportunities and being the best lawyer you can be. It is never too early to begin learning these things. The risk is that it is being left too late in a law student's development. There is too little strategic thinking and real-world contextualisation around their legal studies, and they are too slow to build connections on platforms like LinkedIn. As Maxime further noted: "Whilst completing a law degree, LinkedIn is not often referred to. Students are generally expected to create their profiles on their own. But even if a 1st or 2nd year student is able to adequately create a LinkedIn profile displaying their experiences and skills, where are they generating their connections?" Internships, networking, workshops and practical legal training are all essential to finding legal work and achieving your potential. But you must start early during your legal degree. If you are not already connected with me, please reach out, and let's get your legal career started the right way - just like Maxime who, in this picture, can be seen connecting IRL with two exceptional lawyers, Caroline Callegari and Helen Tung. --- Dr. Peter Macmillan and Bianka Duzelovski are Directors of the Peter Macmillan & Associates Internship Program, one of the largest internship programs for law students and graduate lawyers in Australia. Peter is also Founder of the The Macmillan School of Practising Lawyers.
