For the last couple of months, during my morning sessions before entering the office, I have been noticing homeless children with dogs. I have been talking with the children, trying to understand why they all have dogs. They have given me the following answers: 🐾 Companionship and Unconditional Love: The children explained that having a dog provides them with companionship and a source of unconditional love. In a world where they may feel alone and overlooked, their furry friends offer them unwavering loyalty and affection. 🐾 Emotional Support: These children face numerous challenges and uncertainties every day. They shared that their dogs offer them emotional support, helping them cope with difficult situations and providing a listening ear when no one else is around. 🐾 Sense of Security: Living on the streets can be intimidating and dangerous. The children mentioned that their dogs provide them with a sense of security. The presence of a loyal and protective companion helps them feel safer and more confident as they navigate their surroundings. 🐾 Responsibility and Purpose: Taking care of their dogs gives these children a sense of responsibility and purpose. They feel a deep sense of pride in ensuring their dogs are well-fed, groomed, and loved. It gives them a reason to prioritize their own well-being as they care for their furry companions. These conversations have shed light on the incredible bond between homeless children and their dogs. It is heartwarming to see how these animals bring comfort, joy, and a sense of belonging to their young owners, even in the face of adversity. Let us remember the profound impact dogs have on the lives of these children and continue to support initiatives that help both the homeless and their beloved pets. Together, we can make a positive difference! 🐶 #dogs #homeless #addisababa #ethiopia

"Love between human and dog, dog and human - it's the kind that doesn't change because of life's circumstances . Love is there, even when money isn't." A huge kudos to the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) and The Street Dog Coalition for a recent free clinic in Denver to care for pets of people experiencing homelessness. We can't think of a better, more uplifting way for a medical conference to hold its annual convention, or a better way to celebrate #FeelgoodFriday. It is random acts of kindness and compassion such as this that reaffirm our belief in everyday heroes. Try watching without tissues - we dare you! 🐈THE PET INDUSTRY WRITER / I help pet businesses to show up on Google by writing their websites and blogs / 🐩I teach business owners to write blogs and to understand the SEO on their website🐈
This gets cheerier but these statistics are scary 👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇 🐈 78% of domestic abuse professionals surveyed have encountered cases where cats were targeted by abusers - often to control a partner and stop them leaving 🐈 39% of those domestic abuse professionals have encountered cases where a cat has been killed by a perpetrator of domestic abuse. Most refuges can not take pets so many cat owners can be left to choose between… 🐈⬛ Leaving their cat with their abuser knowing they may come to harm Or 🐈⬛ Staying with their abuser to protect their pet at great personal risk I want to take a minute to thank Cats Protection for offering a free and confidential fostering service for cats whose families are fleeing domestic abuse! 😻😻😻😻 THANK YOU!!! 😻😻😻😻 This vital services means that cats will be safely cared for during this difficult time and can be returned to their cat mums or dads once they are safe and settled! 🏡🐈 Lifeline is currently available across the South East (London, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex, Kent, Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire), and throughout Yorkshire, East Anglia and the Midlands - this is going to be rolled out to more regions across the UK! If someone lives outside of these areas they should still call Cat’s Protection so they can talk you through their options! #catsprotection #cats #domesticabuseawareness #domesticabuse #petcontentwriter

Domestic violence affects pets too. Often, people who cause harm use pets as leverage to further torment and control their victims. 37% of DV survivors said that their partners threatened to injure or even kill the animals they love. Thankfully there's help. URI People and Animals Living Safely (PALS) provides safety for survivors and their pets by allowing them to stay and heal together in transitional housing. Share this post to spread awareness about PALS' decade-long work of honoring the #humananimalbond and supporting survivors in ending cycles of violence. https://lnkd.in/erWA5jZ #ProtectPetsToo #StayTogetherHealTogether #PetsAreFamily #PALS10Years #PALSAnniversary10 #GBV #IPV

Newborn kittens and puppies are undeniably adorable, but they also bring a responsibility to provide loving homes. Each year, numerous dogs and cats become homeless due to the limited availability of caring families. You can make a difference by ensuring your own pets are spayed or neutered. Fun Fact: Did you know that a single cat could potentially bring over 100 kittens into the world during her lifetime? Let’s be responsible owners and help control the population while giving every animal the love they deserve. #PreventALitterMonth #ResponsiblePetOwnership #SpayAndNeuter #AskYourAnimals

Founder of Safeguarding Animal & Human Survivors of Sexual and Domestic Abuse | Trainer | Consultant | Qualified ISVA |
Many survivors of domestic abuse report feeling unable to leave the abusive relationship without ensuring that their companion animal(s) is also safe. Mary Wakeham’s 2021 piece of research found that in 66% of all households where animals were abused, concerns for animal’s wellbeing delayed survivors from leaving the abusive relationship, meant that they stayed, or returned (M, Wakeham, 2021). This can be compounded by friends and family who do not understand why someone just won't leave the animal behind, using it as a form of victim blaming, believing that the person is 'choosing' to stay in the relationship e.g., "if it were that bad, she'd leave without the dog"; rather than truly understanding the power of the human companion animal bond, especially during adverse situations. “People told me to leave him, put him up for adoption, or to put him down. But I kept telling them, I can’t do that. He’s family.” (Survivor) There are now several fostering services available for those fleeing domestic abuse with their pet in the UK, such as Dogs Trust Freedom Programme, Cats Protection's Lifeline and Refuge4Pets providing excellent care to those they serve. However, we should also not underestimate the additional trauma for both the human and animal survivor at being separated from their secure attachments. Unfortunately, it is a good example of just how far-reaching the impact of coercive control can be. We should also not assume that once someone has left an abusive relationship, even with their pet, that they and their animal are safe. The most likely time for domestic homicide to occur is at the point of leaving and the first year post-leaving. Furthermore, post-separation abuse, including stalking, is a very real reality for many. I will be doing posts on these issues and how they relate to pets soon. The more you know, the more you can see the Link and why it is so important that we use this knowledge when safeguarding survivors of domestic abuse, regardless of species.
