#sundayread ☕️ in #biotech Do you know the initial stages of any #drugdiscovery process?🧪 It goes like this (as a rule of the thumb): Idea -> DNA/protein scale -> cell assays -> mouse/animal model -> chemical optimization -> pre-clinical verification -> looong clinical validation.. 🤯 I was always wondering, and I am still not convinced, why with so many tools that could facilitate this process, we use mouse models as the golden standard as the begining, and ending up with experimates on primates 🦧 Despite the fact ‚mouse is the best animal model due to genetic similarity with humans’ as recently I was persuaded by a well-known professor from Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology PAS - I am still not convinced that we can’t relly on substitutes such as: ❇️ organoids ❇️ organ on the chip ❇️ digital twins (to reduce number of petients enrolled in clinical trials) ❗️Even special regulation was implemented last year in the USA enabling the usage of alternative methods (see FDA Modernization Act 2.0) Have a read 👇 of a summary in Science Magazine to get more details about above-mentioned tools. Have you heard about Plantibodies ? Plantibodies, which are antibodies produced in plants, have been shown to function similarly to mammalian antibodies and offer several advantages over traditional antibody production methods. The bioproduction of plantibodies is cost-effective, eliminates the risk of pathogen transfer, and allows for the production of antibodies with diverse specificities. Plantibodies can be produced in a relatively shorter time and in higher yields compared to antibodies derived from animals. The use of plantibodies is safe and has the potential to address human and animal health challenges, particularly in regions with a favorable climate for plant growth. #science #biotechnology #pharma #plants #sciencecommunication #nature

ICH Q5A(R2) Guideline on viral safety evaluation of biotechnology products derived from cell lines of human or animal origin - Date for coming into effect 14 June 2024: This guideline describes the evaluation of the viral safety of biotechnology products including viral clearance and testing, and it outlines what data should be submitted in marketing applications for those products. Biotechnology products include biotherapeutics and certain biological products derived from cell lines of human or animal origin (e.g., mammalian, avian, or insect). In this document, the term virus excludes nonconventional transmissible agents like those associated with mammalian prions (e.g., bovine spongiform encephalopathy, scrapie).
