Costa Rica’s two primary methane-producing sectors are agriculture and waste. Costa Rica’s updated Nationally Determined Contribution includes targets for reducing short-lived climate pollutants – primarily black carbon and methane – with several policy instruments employing a significant focus on circular solutions. Sometimes the easiest answer is to pond-er. As water becomes an even more precious resource, Limoneira has approached the limitation in a different fashion. Using patented technology, Limoneira developed a biological wastewater treatment facility to clean wastewater from farm worker housing and process it to CA Title 22 reclaimed water standards. By having this facility, Limoneira ensures that sustainability is being thought of from multiple dimensions.

Measurement is the key to improvement. The Trust Protocol measures the sustainability effort of U.S. cotton growers enrolled in the program so they can continuously improve. Growers receive personalized data from their farms and can compare their sustainable production practices anonymously to others in their region, or even nationwide. The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) stands as a pivotal legislative framework aimed at combating deforestation and promoting sustainable sourcing practices. While large corporations may have the resources to navigate these regulations, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) face distinct challenges and opportunities in achieving EUDR compliance. What is the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)? The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), proposed to combat deforestation associated with the production of key commodities such as soy, palm oil, beef, rubber and timber, seeks to ensure that products placed on the EU market are sourced sustainably. It requires companies to perform due diligence to identify and mitigate the risks of sourcing products linked to deforestation. Challenges for SMEs in Achieving EUDR Compliance SMEs encounter several challenges when striving to comply with EUDR: a) Complexity of Supply Chains: SMEs often operate within intricate supply chains where traceability and transparency can be difficult to achieve. b) Resource Constraints: Limited financial resources and manpower may hinder SMEs from investing in technologies and expertise required for comprehensive due diligence. c) Information Accessibility: Access to reliable information and data on suppliers' practices, especially in remote or less regulated regions, can be a significant hurdle. d) Regulatory Understanding: SMEs may struggle with interpreting and implementing the detailed requirements of EUDR due to limited legal and regulatory expertise. In conclusion, while EUDR compliance presents challenges for SMEs, proactive measures and strategic initiatives can empower them to contribute positively to environmental sustainability. By leveraging partnerships, adopting technology, and fostering a culture of transparency and accountability, SMEs can navigate the complexities of EUDR while seizing opportunities for growth and differentiation in the marketplace.
