Maintenance shutdowns at pulp mills are big, carefully planned projects involving a huge number of people from both UPM’s own staff and contractor companies. At UPM maintenance shuts take place every 18 months to two years which means that planning of the next project begins immediately after the completion of a maintenance shutdown. Our Pietarsaari pulp mill recently restarted operations after their maintenance shutdown and here’s the recap: - More than 1,400 people were working at the mill site for roughly two weeks - Safety performance was at a fairly good level thanks to active recording of safety observations and improved usage of personal protection equipment. However, two lost time accidents were recorded but without any serious implications. - The Finnish spring created challenging weather conditions with ice cold winds and even snow - The biggest and most demanding of altogether over 3,400 tasks completed was the revamp of the turbine. Hydrated Lime Unloading and Feeding System in Semi-Dry FGD System: The main task of Hydrated Lime Feeding and Unloading System is to unload Hydrated Lime from truck to Hydrated Lime Silo and transport this Hydrated Lime from Hydrated Lime silo to Semi-Dry FGD Scrubber. Hydrated Lime feeding route is divided into two stages: 1. From Hydrated Lime Silo to Buffer Silo 2. From Buffer Silo to Semi Dry FGD Scrubber. In the first stage, transport of hydrated lime is performed by means of pneumatic conveying system. There are two separate transport pipelines from two Hydrated Lime hoppers of Hydrated Lime Silo to Buffer Silo. Transport of Hydrated Lime from Hydrated Lime Silo to Buffer Silo is realized by means of pneumatic conveying system (i.e. dense phase). The hydrated lime capacities ~7000kg/h are transported by means of Dense Phase conveying system recently to one of Semi-Dry FGD System. In the second stage, hydrated lime is transported to Semi-Dry FGD Scrubber (injected just above the Venturi nozzles) by two redundant feeding trains. Each train consists of blower, cooler, feeding equipment and transport line. Both trains are supplied by the same Buffer Silo. During normal system operation one feeder train is working, and the other is designated as standby. The hydrated lime capacities ~3500kg/h are transported by means of Lean Phase conveying system successfully. Air temperature in transportation lines been maintained to prevent formation of CaCO3 (limescale) and clogging. Due to this fact, the heat exchangers for cooling transport air been provided. Gravimetric (Loss-in-weight type) feeders which uses variable speed drive motors been used for feeding hydrated lime to reactor. Each feeder shall accurately meter the Hydrated Lime over the full specified operating range. Feeder rate set point been controlled based on a signal generated by the Plant Control System. Feeder controller shall generate a signal proportional to the material flow for use by Plant Control System for monitoring flow. Along with critical instrumentation for control, monitoring purposes the daunting tasks of handling such hydrated lime given more impetus and insights in Powder handling systems.
