Just around the corner from now, we’re gearing up to convene in Livingstone, Zambia, for an impactful discussion on promoting Africa and unlocking its tourism potential. This event promises not only insightful sessions but also invaluable networking opportunities that could shape the future of our continent’s tourism landscape. SMEs play a pivotal role in this journey. They are the heartbeat of innovation and local economic growth, driving authentic experiences that tourists crave. However, for SMEs to thrive and truly impact the tourism sector, robust policies and meaningful dialogue are essential. These elements ensure that our efforts are not just visionary but also actionable, creating an environment where SMEs can flourish and contribute significantly to our collective prosperity.

The 1.5 million international arrivals, combined with a growing number of domestic tourists, generated 7.75% of GDP and 6.7% of total national employment in 2018 (CBI, 2020). This is as of 2020, the industry continues to grow and game viewing is the main tourism activity. These and more tomorrow.

It's great to see the initiative to market Zambia globally, but it raises questions. Was the selection of a foreign agency put through a tender process? While the decision is exciting, it could have been more impactful if a local agency or a consortium of local firms had been chosen. Did local firms have the opportunity to bid, and if so, did they fail to meet the requirements? To truly benefit Zambia, it would be beneficial for the chosen agency to collaborate with local firms to build capacity and expertise within the local industry. This would not only enhance the effectiveness of the marketing efforts but also contribute to the growth of our local industry. As a country, we should prioritize supporting and nurturing our own industry for long-term sustainable growth. #Patriotism #ZambiakuChalo

The World Economic Forum statistics in 2010 showed that Ghana was ranked 108th out of 139 countries as the world's favorite tourism destination. The country had moved two places up from the 2009 rankings. In 2011, Forbes Magazine, published that Ghana was ranked the eleventh-friendliest country in the world. The assertion was based on a survey conducted in 2010 of a cross-section of travelers. Of all the African countries that were included in the survey, Ghana ranked highest. Ghana ranks as the seventieth−most stable country in the world and as the 58th–most peaceful country in the world. Tourism development is not just about creating destinations, but about shaping the world we want to live in. To achieve this in Africa, we will need to collaborate more. In 2017, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda joined forces for the Discover East Africa campaign. The campaign promoted a tour package that offered visitors the chance to experience the three countries' wildlife, culture, and natural beauty. In 2018, Ghana, Benin and Togo launched the West African Coastal Circuit. Effective partnerships can work across state levels as well. In Nigeria, for example, two or more states can partner to make their tourism destination more desirable and competitive. It's heartening to see such initiatives coming out of Zambia Tourism Agency and the Ministry of Tourism working towards promoting tourism in our country. I agree with your observation about Kenya's successful approach to promoting local tourism through affordable pricing for citizens. Lowering rates for locals in Zambia could indeed encourage more people to explore the rich cultural and natural heritage of the country. I'd rightly want to point out that not every site in Zambia is expensive. Sometimes, the perception of high costs is due to comparisons with flagship destinations. It's essential to highlight the variety of experiences available, such as hiking and camping, which can be more budget-friendly options. While our flagship destinations offer a luxurious experience, there are also opportunities to enjoy the beauty of Zambia in a more affordable and adventurous way. Cape Town goes from strength to strength as a top global destination, but the wider South African tourism industry is struggling to rebound across other regions, as high crime rates and infrastructure challenges hamper recovery hopes. While the Western Cape has seen visitor numbers bounce back close to pre-pandemic levels, key tourism hubs like Durban and Johannesburg continue to underperform, with tourist arrivals down over 80% in some areas. Although the national tourism board has launched an eye-catching campaign fronted by Trevor Noah to boost South Africa's global appeal, experts caution that glossy promotions may jar with tourists' actual on-the-ground experiences relating to safety, services and infrastructure. 🔵Report by Ray Mwareya

Today I got curious about the tourism industry in Africa I had to collect insight which I thought maybe was smart to share with my LinkedIn brothers and sisters DID YOU KNOW? The tourism business is increasingly vital to the world economy, accounting for 5% of GDP, 30% of service exports, and 235 million jobs. Every year, roughly one billion individuals travel abroad. By 2030, consumer spending on tourism, hospitality, and recreation in Africa is expected to reach $261.77 billion, up $137.87 billion from 2015. From 1998 to 2015, service exports, including "industries without smokestacks" such as tourism, grew around six times faster than product exports in Africa. Most countries in the region have already drafted strategic plans to grow tourism as an economic opportunity and development accelerator, having recognized its potential. For instance, Gambia, Kenya, South Africa, and Tanzania are all making considerable.
