I'm definitely too inexperienced to have any advice for anyone but after doing 8 years of research in academia vs 5 years in a startup, I really think the difference between two comes down to one very simple question: "Can I one day make many of these?" If you're a quantum founder or startup scientist and not asking yourself this question from day one, before even doing simulations and table-top experiments, you're likely going to face much, much harder questions when your business is scaling but your products are not. This is particularly important in our field considering that vast majority of startups span out of academic labs and it's really so hard to change your perspectives. #startup #quantum

With an overcast forecast in Austin, opportunity to see the total eclipse seemed a long-shot. But surprisingly the cloud cover allowed my daughter, Caylea Pogue, P.E., and I to capture the event (her's is the much better photo). Without the clouds, the brightness would flood and burn the camera. The positive impact of clouds on the eclipse reminded me of a common situation with innovators and startup leaders. Often, the market opportunity appears so clear, so obvious, they (me!) become blinded by its light, its potential. Dazzled, the innovator fails to look critically at the edges - separating problem from solution, technology function from user benefit, or user benefit from a recursive economic model, etc. Every innovator needs a mentor to provide the needed "cloud cover" - a critical eye, challenging questions, a "show me don't tell me" approach - to dim the dazzle and focus attention on issues that will make or break the startup. The Austin Technology Incubator, through the TEXVMS program, offers such support to its startups - their secret sauce! Proximity to wisdom was a key learning of the IC2 Institute at The University of Texas at Austin through its Technology Venturing Conferences in the late 1980's leading to ATI's founding. Innovfest 2024 was a 3-Day Festival where tech startups gathered to showcase their innovative products to prospective clients. The event also featured panel sessions and pitching sessions for founders to attract venture capital funding. We are thrilled to see how the event has unfolded over the three days. The energy and enthusiasm from both exhibitors and attendees have been remarkable. Watching startups passionately present their innovations and engage with potential clients has been incredibly rewarding. The panel sessions have sparked thought-provoking discussions, and the pitching sessions have provided a platform for founders to connect with venture capitalists. Overall, the event has been a tremendous success, fostering a vibrant community of innovation and collaboration. Attending Innovfest 2024 has been an inspiring and enriching experience.
