⚠️ Latin America’s wild species population sizes plummeted 94% between 1970 and 2020! 🦜 The illegal trade of wild species has contributed to this decline – with birds being the most trafficked in the region. ✈️ As transportation is an essential component to trade, it’s necessary to determine how wildlife traffickers exploit the industry. Yesterday, TRAFFIC’s Colomban MacDowall spoke to key industry stakeholders at United for Wildlife’s #LatinAmerica Chapter Launch on how to patch up the loopholes traffickers squeeze through. Read more on the progress we've made to tackle #IWT in the transportation industry so far 👉 https://ow.ly/JA4650PkH06 #wildlifecrime | Crime Stoppers International | USAID

Over the past 10 years, the Elephant Protection Initiative has been working with its 24 member states and other conservation NGOs like Conservation International, Wild Africa Fund, African Parks Network, and many more to mitigate these risks and secure Africa's ivory. Let’s turn the heat up on efforts to protect our cold-blooded friends this #ReptileAwarenessDay! 🐢 🦎 Reptiles are often a target of illegal wildlife activity. There are various laws and regulations in place that aim to protect and conserve them. Part of protecting and conserving species is ensuring they aren’t removed from nature. With very few exceptions, it is illegal to remove #reptiles from the wild. Thanks to the work of one of our officers and provincial partners, this native to Canada turtle was carefully released back into nature, while following the required species health practices. This turtle had been in possession of someone illegally. If you have a passion for reptiles and want to help protect them, here are some tips: 🗸 Report suspicious activity to Canadian Crime Stoppers Association at 1-800-222-8477! 🗸 Familiarize yourself with the various levels of government laws that aim to protect wildlife. Despite what people may think increasing wildfires are not just happening on the West Coast. The midwest region deals with wildfires, especially after drought, and warmer winters and they can quickly get worse when combined with high winds that frequent our region. The lack of adequate support for firefighters and not using methods such as prescribed burning has left us in a serious situation. With wildfires increasing in amount and strength each year we have no time left to wait to support these communities. Without these essential positions wildlife conservation and the health of our communities are extremely threatened. Read More about this issue here: https://lnkd.in/gXwqVCdZ
