What impact does frailty status have on recovery from surgery? Using an electronic frailty index (eFI), our researchers found frail patients had significantly higher odds of postoperative adverse events than patients with a fit status. According to the research team, the findings are important because the eFI tool can be used to screen and optimize patients in the pre-operative period. “Using eFI to guide pre-operative therapy can potentially improve care and help frail older adults successfully tolerate and recover better from surgery,” said Ashish K. Khanna, M.D., associate professor of anesthesiology and vice-chair of research with the department of anesthesiology, section on critical care medicine. The findings appear in JAMA Network Open. Our work recently published in ANESTHESIOLOGY this month. Single prospective cohort study following cardiac surgical patients at 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery.
