What an event yesterday was! Thank you to Nigel Wright Group and the Newcastle Rugby Foundation for organising such an uplifting and energising morning. We have been inundated with messages of support so we thought we'd give you a little bit of inspiration to round off yesterday and finish the week off on a high! My message was straight forward and simple and that was 'You are the gold, because you get to take you everywhere'. Judging by the responses, this zinger really landed, which made me smile! The superb Lysa Morrison MBA talked about our power skills and how you use Emotional Intelligence to boost our technical skills and experience to be the best version of ourselves and do great things. Being a great leader means dialling up our empathy... it's the key to getting great work done and it's also contagious. Superb message! Then Tony Underwood left us all not only inspired but also with a tear in our eye (Thanks for that Tony! I could have killed you, I have a macho image to protect mate 😂 ) but what really hit home was when he talked about 200,000 kids in our own region are living in poverty. Still hits hard that stat! Well, your feedback , your messages, your social media posts from people wanting to support our Futures programme, has been overwhelming, thank you so much! Tiny acts of kindness can lead to enormous things and since you've been asking how to support the foundation programme and to help reach as many young people in our region as possible, we thought we'd drop the offer in here 👇 1) By sponsoring the programme for just £2200 you get to sponsor a school, college, youth or community group... totally your choice where that goes! 2) Your support will also pay for the foundation to deliver this programme and as a thank you, you'll get sponsorship opportunities and the chance to send 5 of your staff to a half day Emotional Intelligence training course, personally delivered by Lysa and myself - No brainer really! Today we have a cracking an opportunity to be the change we want to see in the world by starting in our region, with our little patch of the world. Get in touch with John Oates & Melanie Magee for further details P.S. How amazing were Reece, Sarah, Calvin & Lauren? 😲 I would not have dared do that at their age, just goes to show what's doable.

Director of Community at the English Football League. Former CEO & Board Member at Grimsby Town Football Club. Ex charity CEO. Early career in local government.
Last night I had the pleasure of attending the launch of the British Future ‘Shared Goals; the power of football to connect diverse communities’ report in Parliament to represent the network of 72 EFL Club Community Organisations (CCOs). The report evidences what many of us know already – that football has a unique power to bring us together. The report highlights that as our nation’s favourite spectator sport, football is one of the rare cultural institutions able to reach all parts of our society. As a point of common ground across our differences, few other pastimes can connect us and spark conversations like ‘the beautiful game’. The report also outlines how football clubs are vital institutions within the communities in which they are based. Providing shared spaces for local residents to meet and mix, they occupy an important role in the social infrastructure of our towns and cities. As sources of local civic pride, football clubs are also often viewed as being among the defining symbols of an area’s local heritage, capable of building powerful narratives about local identity. Combined, this marks football clubs out as having a distinct potential to help bridge many of our divides. Where clubs are able to welcome residents from diverse communities, a shared love of the local team can help connect fans across different backgrounds, creating moments of social contact. This report explores how football clubs, league bodies and policymakers can harness this potential to reach across and foster connection in communities. At the event Dominik Stingas Paczko and I were able to talk about the unique value that Club Community Organisations (the charitable arm of football clubs) add, offering solutions to wider societal challenges. As trusted organisations in towns and cities, football clubs and their CCOs offer an already successful vehicle for policymakers to address key challenges in communities. You can read the report here:- https://lnkd.in/ezzPksQA It makes several key recommendations including that Levelling Up funds should be offered to football clubs to encourage campaigns and community-building activities that strengthen shared civic pride. David McArdle at the EFL helped provide advice and insight into the report. Huge congratulations to Huddersfield Town FC and Brentford FC who worked with British Future to consult fans and local residents to design a campaign aimed at bringing local people from different ethnic, faith and social backgrounds together around a shared sense of pride in their team and their area. #BritishFuture #thepoweroffootball #football #community #EFL #inclusion EFL Trust EFL (English Football League)

Associate Director at Ipsos UK (Senior economist) / PhD in Health Economics and Policy at Lancaster University
🌟 Exciting News! 🌟 We are thrilled to announce that the Youth Endowment Fund has commissioned our Education Children and Families (ECF) team at Ipsos UK to evaluate the "Inspiring Futures" intervention delivered by the Rugby Football League (RFL). This innovative mentoring scheme leverages the power of sports as a hook to engage young individuals over 12 weeks, helping them set and achieve meaningful goals. The intervention aims to enhance wellbeing, foster positive social relationships, and reduce antisocial behaviour and reoffending risks. Our evaluation will be conducted as an efficacy trial (cluster RCT) across more than 100 schools, complemented by an Implementation and Process Evaluation (IPE), ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the intervention's impact and delivery. At Ipsos UK, our ECF team is deeply committed to empowering children and families through evidence-based approaches. We believe that by supporting interventions like Inspiring Futures, we can contribute to positive, lasting change in our communities. Check the published protocol in the link below and stay tuned for updates on our progress. https://lnkd.in/evZDpha2 Stay tuned for updates on this impactful project! 🦁 My fellow Lions, Can we do more and better? Today, we are 1.4 million members in 47,000 clubs across 200 countries. Our impact on the world is undeniable, and our expertise is recognized by the biggest international institutions: UN, UNESCO, UNICEF, WHO, Council of Europe... In 2023 alone, 1.2 billion dollars grants were paid out, including 65 million collected by LCIF alone. We can be proud to be Lions! But can we do as well tomorrow? For some years now, we've been struggling to increase and rejuvenate our membership, particularly in historical geographical areas such as the United States and Europe. That's why, if we want to continue the legacy bequeathed by Melvin Jones and his companions, and go beyond our goals of "Mission 1.5", we need to adapt our association to the evolutions of our times, and listen more closely to our Clubs. There are many questions we need to ask ourselves, but we have three years to address them. What is our association's carbon footprint? Aren't we in danger of being blamed for it one day? Do we really need to increase membership fees to achieve quantitative or qualitative objectives? What about electronic or proxy voting, which would enable all Clubs to express their views? Should Lionism be developed in partnership with companies? How can we change the Lions Club's image to reflect new modes of expression? How can we share our altruistic ethic in an increasingly fragmented world? The list is obviously far from exhaustive. As President of our fine association, I will work with you and the Lions General Assembly on this major modernization project. Let's not be afraid of change. We are Lion! I thank you and count on your support in Melbourne. #LionsClubsInternational #LionsClub #lionsinternational #WeServe #LCIFLions #melbourne2024 #gomesforvp https://lnkd.in/duepPnVk
