When putting a team together, trust is the No.1 attribute we seek. Has it always been? No. Our Managing Director Phil Webster admits he took it as a given that you could trust the person to the left and right of you, after having spent many years in the military. Thanks to Simon Sinek, our awareness this is not a given is at the forefront. You can have the highest skilled team, but without trust within the team, they will not perform. Having doubt of trust is fraught with difficulty and inevitably, failure with ensue. Having a culture of trust from the outset is paramount and underpins a successful team make-up. Skills can be taught, trust can not. This post has not been created due to us finding out we had someone untrustworthy. We're just interested to hear..... I definitely made some mistakes as a young military leader in the Army! When I look back sometimes it makes me cringe. Don't make the same mistakes I did... I thought it was about me sometimes. It never is. It's always about the team. Being tough is not enough. Mental toughness, yes! But you also have to be tough enough to show vulnerability and humility.  Your team probably already know the answer. Ask them how they would do things, rather than telling them what to do. You are only one bullet away! Make sure your team can carry on the fight in your absence. Give your team the chance to step up and you will see them flourish with the experience. The environment you create with actions and words is a direct reflection of your leadership. Make sure that you would want to work for you if the situation was different.

Developing a culture where trust is at the epicentre is paramount to success. It will help instil a sense that everyone in the team is valued and will give them ownership of their own work, and they are more likely to perform at their best. When trust is two-way, it will empower team members to speak up when things could be improved or poor decisions have been made. From my own experience, I'd much rather work with individuals from the right-hand column, even those with low performance can be developed and mentored, further enhancing that trust.
