Choose Senior Gleaners on Giving Tuesday Thanks to volunteers, residents and grocers, we are on track to recover about 150,000 pounds of food otherwise wasted this year. Since 1994, volunteers and people or businesses with extra food have fed hundreds of thousands of hungry county residents. What if we all came together to support this mission. We can! Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving on November 28 and Senior Gleaners is participating. Giving Tuesday will be the start of a fundraising drive to purchase a new or late model van next year. Our goal is to raise $11,000 in the next few months to match a grant from the City of San Diego for this purpose. Our website "Donate" button at www.seniorgleanerssdco.org will connect you to many ways to contribute. Next year will mark our 30th anniversary and we plan to celebrate in several ways. Today we pause to remember and reflect on a day that changed our world forever.   September 11 has been designated as a National Day of Service and Remembrance, inspired in large part by the charitable service and goodwill that emerged from communities and individuals immediately following that fateful day.   At Metsä Board Americas, community service is an important part of our DNA. Our own initiatives include TICCIT (trees into cartons, cartons into trees). Developed by the Paperboard Packaging Council, it involves visiting elementary schools to teach about recycling and the importance of trees to our environment.   Our Norwalk, CT office also participates in food drives for our local food pantry as well as various other volunteer activities.   Here are some things you can do:   - Volunteer at your own local shelter or food bank. Many organizations coordinate events specifically for today.   -  Donate blood. There's always a need, and it's a lifesaving gift.   - Visit a fire or police station to express your gratitude for their continuous service.   - Organize community clean-ups. Beautify parks, streets, or beaches in your area.   - Engage in random acts of kindness. A simple gesture can make a significant impact.   By volunteering, reaching out, and lifting up those around us, we ensure that the legacy of September 11 is not solely one of loss but also one of strength, unity, and selfless service.   #PatriotDay #NeverForget #DayOfServiceAndRemembrance

September is Hunger Action Month! 🥕 Trellis for Tomorrow operates under a principle we call “Dignified Exchange”. This model engages members of our community and empowers them to reclaim control over their access to food. Put simply, Dignified Exchange allows community members to offer something of value in exchange for their produce. In some cases, people choose to exchange money, while others exchange family recipes, volunteer in the garden, or help spread the word about our programs. This model allows us to move beyond a charitable relationship and into a true partnership with the community. The market value of an average weekly delivery of produce is $30. I don't pretend to be an expert on this, but this is one of the many reasons I love working at Feather Down Farms. As a society, we're witnessing the rise of screen addiction among our children, I know we are as a family.   Recent studies have shown that prolonged exposure to screens can lead to issues like sleep disturbances, obesity, poor academic performance, and even developmental delays. 😔 Here are a few steps I have started to try and implement in our house: 📺 Set Screen Time Limits: Establish clear guidelines for screen time and stick to them. We encourage outdoor activities, reading, and imaginative play as alternatives. 🤳 Lead by Example: My children often mimic my behaviour so I am conscious of my screen time and leave my phone in other rooms of the house to remove the temptation for me to scroll or respond to messages 💻 Create Tech-Free Zones: Designated areas in our home where screens are not allowed, such as our dining table or the kids' bedrooms, to promote quality family time. 🏕️ Enjoy a Feather Down weekend often   #ScreenTime #ChildHealth #DigitalWellBeing #ParentingTips #Education #HealthyHabits

📦 Foodbanks are busier than ever. 🗒️ Expanding on previous research on food insecurity and everyday austerity, Dr Alison Briggs Briggs and Prof Sarah Marie Hall's spoke with local charities and community organisations in Manchester and Stoke-on-Trent, exploring the impacts of the cost-of-living crises on their work. 💬 These organisations describe a collective sense of lurching from one crisis to another. While staff and volunteers remarked on how people’s experiences of food insecurity, for instance, were becoming more chronic. 💡 Policymakers need to move towards embedding cash-first approaches to support low-income households instead of relying on the dominant charitable approach. Giving Tuesday Spotlight: Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House This Giving Tuesday, a day globally celebrated for generosity and giving, we invite you to consider supporting a cause dear to us: The Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House (DTESNH). Both founders of CM Agility have been actively volunteering here, with Carina also serving as the Board Secretary. This year's focus is the Community Drop-In (CDI) Lunch program, a cornerstone of the DTES community. We're committed to ensuring its continuation throughout 2024. This program is more than just a meal service; it's a hub for connection and rest, providing over 15,600 breakfasts and 9,400 lunches last year alone. Facing the challenge of rising food costs, our goal is bold but vital: to raise $18,000. This will help us combat food insecurity and ensure the right to nutritious food for all members of our community.
