I've had some exceptional leadership training, so why have I only just found out about Culturally-endorsed implicit Leadership Theory (CLT)? Admittedly most of the studies on CLT were published after my time at the Royal Military Academy, but still. CLT examines the differing expectations and needs for leaders by culture. This is incredibly important not only in developing an inclusive leadership style but in identifying, selecting, and building diverse leaders. Without an understanding of different cultural ideals of leadership, diverse ethnicities will be at a disadvantage not only in promotion processes that don't recognise their potential but by having leaders whose characteristics and styles don't meet their basic needs.

In Seattle’s dynamic executive landscape, characterized by performance and innovation, a noteworthy leadership trend is on the rise: leaders are increasingly embracing the human aspect of leadership.   A recent Egon Zehnder survey asked 200 Seattle area executives about the leadership challenge they face in their day-to-day roles, with results showing an overwhelming desire to focus on personal and team-wide growth opportunities. One of the earliest leadership lessons that one ought to align with and understand is that of the collective voice. As a body of leaders we hold a collective responsibility to own decisions that have been taken at the various levels within the organisation. Dissent is acceptable in the right fora and context, but can never be expressed to levels outside of the decision making machinery.

We tend to associate positive leadership with learning and growth, assuming that exemplary leaders inspire us to emulate their success. And that is true. However, negative leadership that embodies ineffective practices, offers us invaluable lessons on what not to do. By observing these shortcomings, we gain insights into the consequences of poor decisions, toxic behaviours, and flawed strategies. This heightened awareness enables us to navigate our own leadership journeys with greater wisdom, avoiding the pitfalls that stifle progress and inhibit positive impact. So if you can learn from the best people whilst also learning from the worst people, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a very effective leader in your own right.
