Definitely making progress on my audio mentorship project! I was able to get the Quartz system set up and working properly in a Udemy UE5 project after lots of trial and error. To test the music arrangement switching event, I used two versions of a composition I made for my very first Global Game Jam. Basically, the task was to have the music switch whenever the drone got aggro'd (either by shooting at it or getting close enough for it to start chasing you). We also wanted it to switch back to the 'stealth' music whenever the drone exploded (either by losing all health from player's gunshots or self-destructing near the player) This whole process of swapping music tracks on certain events honestly took me hours to figure out, but hopefully as I get more familiar with Blueprints and Quartz, things will get easier! I'd be curious to hear how you sound designers would approach this challenge. Good stuff I can finally share / talk about! Teachers…both school and private studio instructors…I’ve got a #musiceducation post here. First off…many thanks to Corey Brown for inviting me to be a part of the process of testing software last month. As many folks who have worked with me know (like the folks at NS Design and GHS Strings)…I freaking LOVE testing new products and providing detailed feedback. It’s just my jam. I love helping move music tech forward, whether in the realm of physical products or software. For the last few weeks, Corey invited me to test MuseClass, a product resulting from the union of Hal Leonard Music and MuseScore/MuseGroup. In my region, school was/is ending. Adult students are doing fine with lessons…younger students were getting tested within an inch of their resilience. Five tests a week, SOLs, AP tests…stressed out and worn out doesn’t begin to cover it. Corey offered me this opportunity at a great time. After asking permission, I brought in ALL my interested students to really test (and potentially break) the software. I saw tired students happily participate, get excited…and BE excited over the possibilities…especially in a time where school was stressful. Beta testing got them to be involved again…without feeling like they HAD to practice during the two weeks of testing. The reality is the beta testing got my younger guys picking up their instruments and practicing for the sake of exploring. Exploring. Not for a grade. Not because of parent threats. Curiosity. Nice, right? And many of my younger kids are still picking up their devices and their instruments….and exploring (which means practicing but with a healthier mindset), even with summer in full swing. When I'm teaching music composition or marketing, a question that often crosses my mind is: In the 21st century's higher education, what knowledge do students really need? It's a contemporary challenge. They can "google" or "AI" information faster than I can finish a sentence in class. But here's the thing – technology doesn't quite solve it. In fact, too much screen time (and sugar in our life…) can seriously dampen creativity. So, what skills are truly essential, despite the technological advancements we see in every field today? My way of tackling this in education is to take things back to the basics. I often wonder, what if we suddenly found ourselves without electricity on Earth? What skills would become crucial for communication, trade, negotiation, or even basic project management that retains a human touch? How would we approach the creation of sound and music, or storytelling, without our digital tools? This approach helps both me and my students to go back to our cognitive processes. What are the foundational skills that stimulate our interactions and creations? By drawing parallels between historical and current practices (that makes historical examples more relevant in class), we gain a clearer perspective on our actions in the context of overwhelming palette of today’s choices. It's a journey back to the basics, to rediscover the timeless skills that technology can't replace, and to celebrate our innate human ability to innovate, communicate, and connect. That is why we even draw, sing, dance, and play games during higher education classes. These activities are not diversions, they become integral to our learning process. Drawing enhances visual learning, enhancing memory and the ability to conceptualize complex ideas. Singing and dancing connect us to rhythm, pattern recognition, and the emotional dimensions of communication, fostering a sense of community and emotional intelligence. Playing games cultivates strategic thinking, adaptability, and an understanding of teamwork and leadership dynamics. 🚨 Content Stolen Imitation is part of human nature, and mutual inspiration drives innovation. Since starting Aulart , I've been inspired by others many times. However, in the past year, an unfortunate trend emerged. Other companies started copying our work extensively, using our videos with exclusive artists, pictures, PDFs, etc., and attempted to remove our logo or any trace of our brand. In some cases, they even forgot to delete our logo, as shown in the picture below. Ridiculous, isn't it? 😅 It makes me sad to see some education companies trying to sell their courses without making any effort to create good quality content, it really damages the EdTech ecosystem. We put a lot of work and resources into making the best music education content we can. I don't get why they just copy us instead of trying to make their own better content. I can't generalize, but I've noticed many promote the idea of success in music through instructors who themselves haven't found success. This is similar to those offering trading courses promising to be rich, led by individuals who have never made a profit from trading. It's quite absurd 😂. When choosing online courses, I suggest picking ones where the teachers have shown they can do what they teach, with real success.
