Recruiters: Quick reminder- sometimes, you simply have to say no to a candidate. You know in your gut that it's not the right long-term fit. Pull the plug. Don't drag it out. Don't be afraid of saying, "No." Our clients hire us just as much for our ability to say no as they do for our ability to say yes and bring the right candidates forward. The workforce is still righting itself after the craziness of hiring in 2021-2022 where clients were bending over backwards to hire folks. Young attorneys joined the job market then and haven't really experienced anything different if they've been in their role for the last 1-3 years. We need to hold the line for our clients. It's an important skill to wield with care in recruiting. #legalrecruiting #recruiting #hiring

SHOCKER: Recruiter who :::checks notes::: could have his fees clawed back if an attorney he places leaves a position too quickly suggests employers avoid hiring attorneys who've spent < two years at a job. So many head-scratcher statements in this article. The author calls these attorneys, pejoratively, "job hoppers." The author doesn't explain why, in 2023, "job hopping" is a bad thing. He says, "At some point, too much job hopping raises a concern," but doesn't say why that is. The kicker is the example he used of a candidate for whom his gut "said it was a bad idea" for an employer to consider for a new position. They were a "2010 JD graduate with six employers since graduation." What were the totally illegitimate and unreasonable reasons for this candidate's moves? "The reasons included moving geographically for family, and two 'step up' opportunities for better titles and more money." Oh. Then I guess the attorney was a poor performer? "This attorney has terrific academics and excellent interviewing skills." Gotcha. So I guess, as a result of these moves, the candidate didn't have any marketable skills or traits? "I thought this candidate’s experience, qualifications and charisma were all good fits for the position we were filling." Alrighty then. So, the big problem was that the attorneys left their job every two years for perfectly good reasons? Why's that a problem? "My gut told me it was a bad idea." Given this recruiter's key clients—corporations—it's no wonder he ducked the question that his article begs: "Are attorneys 'job hopping' because they're disloyal and always on the prowl for something better? Or is it because their employers treated them like they were expendable and had no interest in building a culture that retained attorneys for the long term?" Instead of taking shots at "job hoppers," perhaps a more effective piece of thought leadership for all parties would have been an article titled, "Here's how to turn job hopping employees info lifers."

As a legal recruiter, it is my job to listen when you share your goals, to dive deep on your background, and hear about the types of job that you want. But it is also my job to tell you the types of roles that you would be a strong candidate for. I always want to be as candid as possible, and that includes sharing my expertise about where you are most likely to be hired. It doesn't mean your dream job irrelevant, it's that firms and companies want to know what you can offer them, not what you are looking for in a job. I can help you find the right fit where your dreams meet the reality of the market. #legalrecruitment #jobsearch #hiring #lateralhiring #lawfirm #amlaw100

What do hiring managers look for when interviewing attorneys? - Hunger & excitement about the opportunity - Willingness to Grow/Track Record of Growth - Someone they would enjoy working alongside - Hard workers, who own what is on their plate What do candidates look for when interviewing for a role? - A place where they'll be valued - A boss who will contribute to their growth (sometimes through hands-on mentorship and other times by getting out of the way and being supportive when needed) - The right compensation, bonus/equity, and benefits - A company that is self-aware of the good and the bad and will be upfront (These points are based on themes I'm hearing in many conversations on both sides of the table right now) #hiringpractices #recruiting #legalrecruiting
