Last week, UCON's EVP, Emily Cohen, joined other thought leaders and elected officials for a POLITICO forum on the future of transportation funding in California. The issue is more urgent than many realize. Every California citizen relies on transportation infrastructure. UCON is a leading advocate in the effort to secure and protect infrastructure funding today and for the future.

Earlier this year, I had the privilege of moderating a roundtable discussion at the United States Conference of Mayors Washington D.C. meeting titled "Empowering Resilient Communities: Infrastructure Projects Fueling Real Results." I was proud to be joined by Cleveland Mayor Justin M. Bibb, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, and Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker. Infrastructure advocacy has been a common thread in my career, from my years in local government as Chief of Staff to Mayor Dyer, to my federal service at the U.S. Department of Transportation (Federal Aviation Administration and Federal Railroad Administration), to now working for a technology company, SiemensUSA. And what I heard from the mayors during the roundtable has shaped my thinking for 2024 when it comes to this powerful moment for American infrastructure, as a trifecta of federal legislation and additional funding programs shift us from advocacy to implementation. A promising new proposal, Senate Bill 1572, aims to study extending TriMet's WES (Westside Express Service) commuter rail service between Wilsonville and Salem, which could support more sustainable and efficient land use patterns by promoting transit-oriented development, reducing sprawl, fostering economic growth, improving access to affordable housing, and mitigating congestion and emissions. It would also help Oregon create a new pathway to activate federal transit dollars with intra-city transit. This is particularly important as we outline a path for significant projects and investments in a 2025 transportation package. With broad bipartisan support for the bill, we're one step closer to making public transport an easier and more accessible option in the Willamette Valley. Check out our 2024 legislative overview for the latest about the bill, including our testimony, and others we're backing this session: https://lnkd.in/gs3ZYkG7. 📷 courtesy TriMet

Great points from Sir John Armitt: The planning system in the UK is failing us. We have to be clear between national and local decision-making. How do we deliver schemes in the national interest? Politicians are accountable to the public and have to be prepared to be open to them. Infrastructure depends on decisions on Why, What and How. We love resolving How but consistently fail to tackle the Why? We have difficulty learning from the mistakes of others. Number one ask? Consistency in government.
We were pleased to welcome Sir John Armitt, Chair of the National Infrastructure Commission, to our Discussion Dinner, at the Oxford and Cambridge Club. He pointed to the failure of the planning system in the UK and the need to be clear between national and local decision-making. How do we deliver schemes in the national interest? His number one ask? Consistency in government. It was a great evening and our grateful thanks to Sir John for sharing his thoughts and time with us.

Well how about that.
Reflecting on over seven years of dedication to the Interstate 14 project fills me with nostalgia, especially when I revisited the Capitol during this legislative session. In 2018, alongside these two esteemed individuals, Senator Ed Harbison and Senator W.R."Randy" Robertson, as well as others like the late Represenative Richard Smith, Representative Vance C. Smith, Jr., Representative Calvin Smyre, Representative Teddy Reese, Esq., Representative Carolyn Hugley, and Representative Debbie Buckner, we worked tirelessly to pass an I-14 resolution through the Georgia General Assembly. Witnessing the progress since then has been remarkable. During my recent update to our legislators, I was thrilled to highlight our strides, from securing authorization from U.S. Congress to the impactful work unfolding within local communities along the route. Notably, I informed them of Columbus's petition to the Georgia Department of Transportation for the Federal Highways Administration to open the segment in Columbus. This request mirrors the successful approach taken in Killeen, Texas, in 2017, which saw the designation of the inaugural section of Interstate 14. We aim to replicate Texas’s success, paving the way for the first stretch of Interstate 14 beyond the Lonestar state. While challenges, including funding and prioritization persist, our momentum signifies that Interstate 14's realization is within reach. Together, with folks like Senator Harbison and Robertson, we will make Interstate 14 a reality for our great state and country! #gapol #Interstate14 #my14 #InfrastructureDevelopment
