A famous quote by George Doriot, who started one of the first venture capital funds in 1946, really resonated with me when I first heard it. He said: …any day of the week I’ll take an A-Team with a B-idea over a B-team with an A-idea. Investors bet on people every day. Sure, you have to have a good idea, traction, go-to-market strategy, sound financials, and the like. But, first and foremost, you need a solid team in place. People that have “been there, done that” are critical to your achieving success. If you have a “B” idea, but an “A” team, then the team will quickly realize that they need to improve the idea or abandon it for a different one altogether. In other words, when you have a solid team, they are able to pivot as needed to ensure you are successful. That’s what investors want to see. #Finance #Success #TeamWork

Charles Hudson is one of the pioneers of the pre-seed investing world. He is the founder of Precursor Ventures and a mentor to many emerging fund managers. I recently hosted him on Pod to unpack fund building. My Top 10 Takeaways from our conversation: 1. Precursor Ventures: Founded nine years ago, Precursor Ventures distinguishes itself by targeting founders outside traditional networks without significant traction, aiming to bridge the gap between idea and product-market fit. 2. Portfolio construction: The fund's strategy remains consistent, backing founders from day one. While the number of portfolio companies has grown, check sizes have increased to meet the evolving needs of startups. 3. Diversified Portfolio: Precursor's strategy involves making multiple investments per fund, targeting people outside conventional networks. Charles argues that this approach works well for identifying unique opportunities. 4. Non-consensus Investing: Charles emphasizes the importance of being right when adopting a non-consensus strategy. He advises fund managers to articulate why the best founders in their ecosystem would choose them. 5. Fundraising Challenges: Fundraising for the first fund was challenging, taking two years to raise $15 million. The emphasis on a solo GP model and a unique portfolio construction presented unforeseen challenges. 6. Clarity in Fundraising: Charles learned the importance of being clear about the fund's strategy and not trying to convince those who fundamentally disagree. Focus on building relationships with those genuinely interested in the fund's approach. 7. Dealing with Rejections: Charles suggests respecting those who reject the fund's model and avoiding persistent engagement. Focus on those genuinely trying to get to a yes and build relationships beyond the ask for investments. 8. Balancing Investing Enthusiasm and Firm Management Be mindful of the balance between enjoying the investing side and handling the growing complexity of managing a firm. 9: Constantly Seek Advice from Those Ahead: Seek advice from those a few steps ahead, adapting to challenges at different fund stages. 10: Firm Building Challenges: Charles identifies firm building as the most challenging aspect of running a venture firm. Only 25% of the team focuses on investing, while the rest supports various aspects of running the firm, including finance and investor relations.
