The Impact of Corporate Citizenship on Shareholder Value When we speak of corporate citizenship we’re describing how companies contribute to the social and environmental well-being of the communities and stakeholders they affect. It goes beyond compliance and philanthropy and involves integrating sustainability principles and practices into the core business strategy and operations of the company. But what is the impact of corporate citizenship on shareholder value and does it really pay off in the long run? Public and private companies alike invest significant resources in philanthropic and other corporate citizenship initiatives, including $14 billion in reported charitable contributions by the S&P 500 in 2021. Yet, many of the same organizations do not fully measure or report on the impact their citizenship efforts have on the company’s bottom line. While citizenship programs can create lasting societal impact, they also represent significant (and discretionary) capital investment. However, it’s important to assess how citizenship initiatives are generating a return on investment and tangibly increasing firm value. The Conference Board published a very insightful report on this very topic, highlighting some key takeaways for corporates attempting to measure ROI: -- Corporate citizenship affects shareholder value through multiple channels, shaping customer purchasing decisions, employee behaviours, investor relations, product innovation, market building, and government relations. -- CEOs should engage their corporate citizenship and finance teams—along with business leaders—to map corporate citizenship activities against internal KPIs. Corporate citizenship affects a firm’s value in a number of ways, including strengthening brand, loyalty, and reputation, launching and enhancing products and services, increasing employee engagement and alignment as well as expanding access to capital on favorable terms. Facilitating the firm’s license to operate in addition to strengthening a company’s ESG proposition are both seen as value enhancing. Measuring corporate citizenship impact on share value isn’t straightforward, but there is a myriad of ways to measure this. Afterall, what gets measured gets managed and establishing a clear connection between citizenship efforts and ROI should be undertaken, considering the benefits to the bottom line. Fiskars Group has been included in the top 10 of Nordic Business Diversity Index's Finland Large Cap category ✨ 💡 The Nordic Business Diversity Index shares insight into the diversity of senior leadership in Nordic listed companies, including over 600 companies from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and Sweden. The study is conducted by Impaktly, a sustainability consultancy. This year, Fiskars Group has ranked as #8 in the Finland Large Cap category. “I’m pleased to see Fiskars Group’s inclusion in the top 10. We believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion fuel our creativity and growth”, says Anna Mindelöf, Fiskars Group’s Chief People Officer. “While this index takes into account only some aspects of diversity, developing our work in many others is also very important to us. For example, one of our five sustainability targets is our employees’ inclusion experience, which we want to be within the top 10% of global high-performing companies. We are constantly developing our ways of operating as there is always room to improve. We want to build an inclusive, fair, and open working environment, in which everyone feels heard, and their uniqueness is celebrated.” ➡️ Read more about the Nordic Business Diversity Index here: https://lnkd.in/dZv6svCv #FiskarsGroup #ESG #DEI #NordicBusinessDiversity #NBDI2024

“……And what of PR!?” Our philosophy is that reputation follows responsibility. At Nalente, we believe that a good corporate reputation follows responsible corporate citizenship. We are cautious not to conjure up faux reputations for corporates. Instead, we develop frameworks and standards that enable organisations to cultivate the appropriate cultural exchanges and corporate ‘behaviours’, generally throughout the value chain and particularly those that are customer facing, in order to position the organisation favourably in the reputation continuum. Cultivating and embedding a culture of responsible corporate citizenship leads to socially (and stakeholder) acceptable corporate actions, and this is the bedrock on which good corporate reputations flow. At Nalente, we dont spin reputation. We cultivate it. Contact us for more on conceptualising and tracking corporate reputations😊 Ukudliwa kombona kukuchubelana!
