Heyden 4 hard coal-fired power plant officially decommissioned! Today marks a historic milestone as we permanently shut down the Heyden 4 coal-fired power plant in Petershagen, Germany. With its 875 MW capacity, this plant has been a key pillar of energy supply for decades. “Since 1987, our employees at Heyden 4 have played a crucial role in ensuring the security of supply in Northern and Western Germany. Electricity has been generated here since 1951. The final shutdown is a necessary step for Germany’s coal phase-out and an integral part of Uniper’s transformation,” said our COO Holger Kreetz. Heyden has delivered reliable power for decades. Now, we’re looking ahead to the site’s future. In close collaboration with the town of Petershagen, we are developing a master plan to create future jobs and opportunities. Historic milestone for the UK and Uniper! Today, our Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station ends coal generation in the UK. This marks a key milestone, not only for Uniper, but also in the UK’s journey to clean power. The UK’s last coal-fired power station will officially end generation, on 30th September, after 57 years of keeping the nation’s lights on, closing the doors on over 140 years of coal-fired generation in the UK. Over the years Ratcliffe has played a key role in keeping the nation’s lights on. Since first commissioning in 1967, it has produced enough energy to make more than 21 trillion cups of tea and its 2GW capacity has been enough to power two million homes. And its eight iconic 114 metre high cooling towers are a key part of the East Midlands skyline. Following closure, the site will go through a decommissioning process, which is expected to last around two years, before the site can be handed over for the next part of the process. As the sun sets on the cooling towers, final operational shifts will be completed and there’s time for reflection. We’re all incredibly proud of what the Ratcliffe team have achieved together over the years and to be part of this energy milestone.
