Roundabouts are an ever-growing solution to improve safety and efficiency at intersections; however, not all roundabouts are created equal, as shown below ❌ From Christopher J. Schultz, PE, Director of Roadway & Highway Design: A critical component to roundabouts is the correct entry path alignment and eliminating entry path overlap ✅ How do you avoid path overlap? Tangent entry is the key! This is a step that can be overlooked during design, but it is critical in the proper alignment of entering vehicles. Vehicles that approach the yield sign might need to stop to circulating traffic; in this case, the steering wheel of the entry vehicle should be straight at the yield line. That way, when the driver enters the roundabout, the vehicle is aligned with the correct circulating lane. To help with this, draw in a tangent line from the circulating lane to the entry radius that extends beyond the yield line by 20 feet. We want to avoid the top situation in the graphic at all costs and see more of the bottom situation instead. Safety is key, and that can start as early as design! #LifeAtLochmueller

A roundabout is a circular intersection design increasingly being used by MDOT. Roundabouts have been proven to decrease traffic delays and congestion safely. When selected and designed correctly, roundabouts can handle a high volume of traffic, including commercial trucks and large emergency vehicles. There are now approximately 100 roundabouts in Michigan! How to Drive a Roundabout Roundabouts are easy to navigate and safer than traditional intersections.
